BURMA UPDATE
26 FEBRUARY 2010
DAW AUNG SAN SU KYI’S APPEAL WAS REJECTED

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s appeal, which represents her final attempt to gain
freedom from 18 months house arrest, was rejected this morning by the Supreme
Court – the highest judicial organ in Burma.

This morning’s session of Supreme Court during which a Supreme Court judge read
out the rejection order was attended by heads of diplomatic missions in Burma as
well as four defense lawyers of the detained democracy icon.

On coming out of the Supreme Court, chief spokesman and defense lawyer U Nyan
Win declared that they would continue to fight for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s
freedom by putting up Special Appeal to Supreme Court in Rangoon and in Nay Pyi
Taw in accordance with the judicial process in Burma.

“For that matter, we will try to acquire from the Supreme Court its reasons for
rejecting the appeal,” U Nyan Win continued to declare.

On coming out of the Supreme Court, the French ambassador Jean-Pierre Lafosse
said: "The court rejected the appeal; it came as no surprise to us. She should be
released immediately as one of the conditions for real national reconciliation."

Though the defense lawyers vowed to continue their fight for the release of the
world’s most well known prisoner of conscience, all indications point out that their
fight will be futile. In that case, Aung San Suu Kyi will not be able to take part in
the upcoming general elections, widely believed to be held in October 2010, as her
18 months house arrest would come to an end only in November 2010.
