STOP THE GENOCIDE
The Northern Territory Intervention, the so-called “emergency response” to a reportinto child sexual abuse in NT Aboriginalcommunities, is nearly three years old. Itis a bipartisan policy of the “Labor” Partyand the Liberals, introduced by Howardand continued by Rudd. It is not, andnever was, about child abuse.The NT Intervention comprises ninemeasures, the most prominent of thembeing:* Compulsory acquisition of Aboriginalland in targeted communities;* Compulsory control of Centrelinkbenefits of people in the targetedAboriginal communities; and* Imposition of Government BusinessManagers to control targeted Aboriginalcommunities.To achieve this, and the other measures,the Racial Discrimination Act wassuspended. This is as clear an admissionof racial discrimination that you can getfrom any modern government.

The NT Intervention marks a policy turnof historic proportions for Australiancapitalism. A decisive fraction of theruling class has abandoned itsinconsistent and often tokenisticsupport for indigenous self-determination. It is now driving hard atre-introducing the long-discreditedpolicy of paternalism and assimilation.Land rights and native title have failedto produce a class of capitalistAboriginal entrepreneurs. Instead,underfunding and racist contempt havecreated communities, especiallyaround township camps, where manyAboriginal people have neither afunctioning traditional culture nor theresources to prosper in white society.The capitalist class has concluded thatAboriginal people can't manage their own affairs, so they have to have whitepeople control them again “for their own good”. And what is good for themis (according to them) assimilation, tobecome absorbed into white capitalistsociety and live just like white people.

The unions, and all working classorganisations, need to come together todenounce the NT Intervention as the racistatrocity it is, and fight to end it. In thecourse of this struggle, we can develop atrue movement of reconciliation. We canbuild a society which recognises landrights, and abolishes both wage labour andreal estate. We can have a revolution.
