 Fight against fees and cuts
MY RECORD
I am sabbatical Vice-President(Education) at Hull University Union – elected as a fighting, socialist candidate in atraditionally right-wing unionand helping to build anactivist culture here overthe last two years. I playeda central role in organisinglast year’s national demon-stration for free education inLondon. I have been a social-ist, anti-war and anti-fas-cist activist since I was 16.Before I went to university,I was a UCU activistand branch secretary atWestminster College inLondon. I am a member ofEducation Not for Saleand Workers’ Liberty, andNorthern co-convenor ofthe new National Campaign Against Fees and Cuts.
MY POLICIES
• Cuts are not inevitable
: stu-dents and workers should not payfor the bosses’ crisis. For mass directaction against cuts and fees.Financial, organisational and polit-ical support for local anti-cutscampaigns. 100 percent supportfor workers fighting back, in edu-cation and beyond. Struggles likeVisteon, Vestas and Tower HamletsCollege show the way to win.
• No to higher fees
, no to a grad-uate tax! NUS must demand freeeducation and living grants for all,in FE and HE. Stop the cuts, stopprivatisation - tax the rich to fundeducation and public services.
• Education should be a right
,available to all as a public serviceand controlled by students, work-ers and communities, not a com-modity churned out in educationfactories to produce a profit and pli-ant workers for exploitation.
• Support the National Campaign Against Fees and Cuts
.
For a
mass campaign to union-ise students
who work. Campaignfor a real living wage, withoutexemptions or age differentials.Fight to scrap the anti-union laws.
For a
democratic nationalunion.
Scrap the new constitu-tion and the plans to merge withNUSSL. No to trustee boards;fight for a longer, sovereign nationalconference and a national execu-tive that controls the union’s oper-ations. Defend the autonomy of theLiberation Campaigns.
• Fight sexism, homophobia, disability discrimination andall forms of racism
. NeitherIslamophobia nor anti-semitismis acceptable in the student move-ment, on our campuses or insociety. Fight the government’sattempts to turn universities intopolice agencies spying on Muslimstudents. Stand up to the reli-gious bigots: for a woman’s rightto choose. Solidarity with asylum-seekers’ and migrant workers’struggles - no one is illegal! Forsocialist policies that fight the fas-cist BNP and the social decay onwhich it feeds.
• Build campaigning links
withstudents’ and workers’ strugglesinternationally.
For
an outward-looking, polit-ical NUS
that campaigns on issuesfrom fighting climate change tosolidarity with the Palestinians todemanding the withdrawal oftroops from Afghanistan.

WHY I’M STANDING
I am standing for President at this year‘s national conference to helpstudent officers and activists builda fighting alternative to the cur-rent leadership of NUS, who havetrashed our national union’sdemocracy to protect the Labour government from a serious fight back against cuts and fees. As New Labour makes hundredsof millions in cuts, and anti-cutsand free education campaignsblossom across the country, weneed an NUS that backs theminstead of standing in their way.
NUS’s education funding policy –aimed entirely at tinkering with the method of payment rather than challenging feesaltogether – represents a betray-al of students’ interests and a capitulation to New Labour’s Thatcherite ideology. I’mstanding in this electionbecause I want to reassert basic working-class socialist ideas in our movement – most fundamentally, the idea that stu-dents should unite with workers tofight for a society that puts humanneed before the ‘needs’ of profit
.
