Introduction
Corporal punishment is controversial subject in America. Students at Tuskegee

University were administered a survey asking their views toward Corporal Punishment.
In my research report, classification, gender, and age of the respondent are the
background variables. The type of punishment used, if it made them feel like their
parents/guardian didn’t love them, or if it was right to hit others, and did the respondent
agree with the forms of punishment used. My hypothesis are as follows; There is more
than likely more female respondents than male respondents, More male respondents
were spanked as a means of discipline than female respondents and More females
under 21 are have more likely are spanked as a means of discipline than female
respondents 21 through 25.

Description/Interpretation/Rationale
The first univariate pie chart, more respondents were in the age group of 21 to 25. 37
percent of respondents are between the ages of 21- 25 years old. 36 percent of
respondents are under 21 years old. 17 percent of respondents are thirty one and older.
10 percent of respondents are between the ages 26 – 30 years old. More respondents
are between the ages of 21 and 25.

This 2nd Univarite pie chart shows the respondents classification. More respondents are
Senior’s. 28 percent of respondents are seniors. 22 percent of respondents are Juniors.
9 percent of respondents are Sophomore’s. 21 percent of respondents are Freshman. 3
percent of respondents are in Vet school. 17 percent of respondents are in Grad school.
More of the respondents are Seniors. A larger number of Senior’s took the survey.

and 7 percent answered no. More respondents were spanked as a mean of discipline. A
larger number of respondents who participated in the survey were spanked.

This Univariate chart shows the type of punishment/discipline did your parents use. The
values were grounding, taking away privledges, lecture, yelling, beating, and other. 44
percent of responses were beating. 17 percent of responses were taking away
privlegdes. 10 percent of responses are grounding. 26 percent of responses are
timeouts. 3 percent of responses are other. A larger number of respondents responded
“beating” to the questionnaire. More respondents received beatings as their type of
punishment. Corporal Punishment in the form of a “beating” is more common.

somewhat. 24 percent of responses were yes. 67 percent of responses were no. A
larger number of respondents responded no to the question, as a child do you think
spanking made you think that it was al right to hit others. More respondents didn’t think
that spanking encouraged them to hit others.

punished, did it make you feel that your parents did not love you.” 63 percent of the
respondents answered no. 22 percent of respondents answered sometimes. 15 percent
of respondents answered yes. The 15 percent that answered yes didn’t feel loved. The
22 percent of respondents that said sometimes, felt only in certain situation they felt
unloved. The 63 percent of respondents that answered no, felt like never t any moment
when they were punished they felt unloved. A larger number of respondents said no to
the questionnaire. More respondents tend to not to feel unloved when they were
spanked.

13 percent were no. 17 percent were somewhat. A larger number of respondents
answered yes. More respondents agree with the forms of punishment that their parents
used. Those who agree most likely did not get spankings consistently or had fair
parents.

This bivariate chart shows the responses to the question “do you agree with the forms of
discipline by” and the chart is divided the respondents gender. 2 percent of female
respondents said no and 23 percent of male respondents. More males disagreed with
the forms used in than female respondents that agreed. 12 percent of female
respondents responded somewhat and 7 percent were male respondents. More female
respondents responded somewhat than males. 10 percent of female respondents said
yes and 12 percent of male respondents. A larger number of male respondents
responded no. More males did not agree with the discipline they received. Males are
more likely to receive worse punishment than females because more males disagreed
with the forms of discipline used than females.

The bivariate graph shows if the respondents were spanked by the respondents
classifications. 22 percent of freshman respondents said yes and about 2 percent
answered no. Out of the freshman, more were spanked. 9 percent of sophomores said
yes and none said no. Out of the sophomore respondents, more were spanked. 23
percent of junior respondents were spanked and about 5 percent was not. Out of the
Juniors more were spanked. 29 percent of Seniors were spanked and about 1 percent
was not. Out of the Senior respondents, most were spanked. 17 percent of the grad
school students were spanked. All grad school respondents were spanked. 8 percent of
vet school respondents were spanked. All vet school respondents were spanked. Out of
all the classifications, more seniors were spanked. The difference in generations along
with tradition and rules of the respondents parents have impact on the variations of
percentages.

The chart shows if the respondent thinks it is okay to spank children by the respondents
classification. 37 percent of freshman respondents said yes. All freshman respondents
believe it is okay to spank children. 39 percent of Sophomore respondents answered
yes. All the sophomore respondents believe it is okay to spank children. 10 percent of
Junior respondents replied yes. All the Junior respondents believe it is okay to spank
children. 17 percent of senior respondents said yes. All senior respondents believe it is
okay to spank their children. Sophomore had the highest percentage of respondents
who believe it okay to spank children. No Grad school or vet school students responded
to the question.

The multivariate graph examines respondents other types of punishment by the

respondent’s age and controlled gender. 3 percent of male respondents under 21
answered timeouts. 8 percent of male respondents under 21 answered taking away
privileges. 6 percent of male respondents answered beatings. More male respondents
under 21 received beatings as other type of punishment. Out of the male respondents
21-25 years of age 4 percent answered timeouts, 4 percent answered grounding, 1
percent answered taking away privileges, and 11 percent answered beatings. More
male respondents between the ages 21-25 received beatings. Out of male respondents
who are in the age group of 26 and 30, only 7 percent received timeouts and the rest are
missing. Out of male respondents 31 and older 9 percent received timeouts and 8
percent received beatings. More male respondents, 31 and older received timeouts. A
larger number of male respondents received beatings. The second graph examines
female respondents. Out of the female respondents under 21, 3 percent were given
timeouts, 3percent received grounding, 8 percent had privileges taken away, and 6
percent received beatings. Out of female respondents ages 21-25, 10 percent received
timeouts and 15 percent received beatings. The rest are missing. More female
respondents were given beatings as other types of punishment. Out of the male and
female respondents, a larger percentage of males received beatings. Males are viewed
as stronger and more stubborn, this may be the reason behind the results.

The Multivariate graph shows if the respondents were spanked by age group and
controlled by gender. Out of female respondents under 21, 22 percent answered yes
they were spanked and 4 percent answered no they were not spanked. Out of the
female respondents that are 21-25 years of age 19 percent were spanked and 1 percent
was not. More female respondents were spanked than not. More female respondents
under 21 were spanked. In the second chart male respondents are being examined and
asked if they were spanked. Out of the male respondents under 21, 17 percent of male
respondents were spanked and 5 percent were not. Out of the male respondents 21-25
years old, 2 percent said yes and 3 percent said no. Out of the male respondents, 26-30
years old, 10 percent were spanked and none were not spanked . Out of the male
respondents that are 31 and older, 17 percent of male respondents were spanked and
zero said they were not spanked. No male respondents 26-30 and 31 and older did not
receive a spanking as discipline. . A larger amount of male respondents received
spankings than those who did not .More female respondents under 21 were spanked.
Male respondents under 21 and 31 and older had the highest percentage of males who
received spankings.
Analysis & Conclusion
My hypothesis were as follows; There is more than likely more female respondents than
male respondents, More male respondents were spanked as a means of discipline than
female respondents and More females under 21 are have more likely are spanked as a
means of discipline than female respondents 21 through 25.The background variables
from the chart show that more respondents are between the ages of 21 and 25, a larger
number of Senior’s took the survey, and a larger number of males took the survey. The
questionnaire items used in the charts show, a larger number of respondents who
participated in the survey were spanked, corporal punishment in the form of a “beating”
is more common, more respondents didn’t think that spanking encouraged them to hit
others, a larger number of respondents said no to the questionnaire, and more
respondents agree with the forms of punishment that their parents used.
The Bivariate charts showed the relationship between receiving spankings and the
gender of respondents. In conclusion to the chart, more males did not agree with the
discipline they received. The second bivariate chart showed the relationship between
respondents who received spankings and their classification, in conclusion to the chart,
out of all the classifications, more seniors were spanked. The third bivariate chart shows
the relationship between the question if the respondent would spank their child and the
respondents classification. From the chart I analyzed, sophomores had the highest
percentage of respondents who believe it okay to spank children.
The Multivariate charts showed other types of punishments received and age of the
respondents controlled by gender. From the chart, a larger number of male respondents
received beatings from male respondents. More female respondents were given
beatings as other types of punishment. The first Multivariate chart resulted in out of the
male and female respondents, a larger percentage of males received beatings.
The second multivariate chart examines the relationship between the question if you
spanked and the age controlled by the gender of the respondent. The result for the
female respondent was more female respondents under 21 were spanked. The result
for the male respondents is. A larger amount of male respondents received spankings
than those who did not. In conclusion, more female respondents under 21 were
spanked. Male respondents under 21 and 31 and older had the highest percentage of
males who received spankings.
