Congratulations on this wonderful endeavour to expose Kural to a vast audience so that more can benefit from its wisdom and foresight. Thirukkural is one of a kind, unparalleled in any language in content, in breadth of topics and in relevance to any society - ancient or modern, east or west. It touches every tiny and superior aspect of a person's life and lays the rules and regulations of what is good and sensible and leads one upward and benefits everyone in the long run and what could bring about downfall of self and everything else. Valluvar is apparently an ascetic by profession, but his work is divine and shows that he had deep knowledge of all aspects of life and of all trades, from the valour of a glorious king to the simplicity of a pauper, from the mild farmer to the cleverest spy, from the honourable values of being virtuous to the thrills and calls of wild love, from the cunning needed to run profitable businesses and gather wealth to the glory of those who have renounced all attachment and desires, from the praise of nature and devotion towards a nameless creator, to being beware of pretentious religious fiends, from being grateful unto death to true friends and being wise enough to detect false friends who will lead you to destruction. Most important is the fact that Valluvar's work is probably the most perfect example of a holy text that has nothing to do with any particular religion. Thiruvalluvar never mentions the name, symbols or markings of any particular religion or deity. This is a wonderful undertaking and should be encouraged and supported. It is more important that translations hold the proper meaning and context of the content of the verses rather than trying to rhyme the translated words in English. Also close adherence to the composer's meaning of the verses are important in any translation to maintain credibility. Example: Note the poem in ManaiMatchi : "Theivam thozaall kozhunan thozhudhezhuvaall peyyena peiyum mazhai". Meaning by Valluvar: The rains will obey commands and pour forth according to the wishes of a woman who does not worship any deities but worships her husband instead. The translation found here does not say it as such. This should not be taken as criticism meant to be negative, but as an effort to increase the effect this would have on Kural enthusiasts trying to use this web site. Thank You. Regards Uma

Once again I went back and read a few more. Needless to say thirukkural is a gem. When curious non tamil speaking browsers want to see why it is such a gem, they would use the English translations. Unfortunately those translations are pathetic in this version. For instance, read the interpretation of kural 393. It would not make any sense to a non-tamil reader. A better interpretation might be, 1: Literal - Learned are those that have two eyes. For the illiterate even the eyes are nothing but two wounds on the face. 2. General - Education provides the mind's eyes. I am no expert so I do not claim my interpretations are better. However, I do think the interpretations provided are inadequate. Just a suggestion to make this page even more useful.

This is a good source for the thirukkural. However, not at all a good source for the interpretations. For example, on kalvi (392) the interpretation seems to be, knowledge of letters and numbers are the eyes of all living beings. The interpretation provided here is surely inapt.
