WELCOME

Welcome to Congress

2 2010 Religious Education Congress

WELCOME

General Info
March 2010

I am delighted to welcome you to our annual Religious Education Congress. This

extraordinary event affords us an opportunity to renew our commitment to pass on the
wonderful richness of our Catholic faith: our beliefs, rituals and spiritual traditions.
The theme selected for Congress 2010 draws us into the story of God’s Incredible
Abundance overflowing in love and compassion and echoed down through the centu-
ries. To the exiles it is a promise of restoration, reminder of a life-giving Spirit, and in
Jesus it is a celebration of the wonder and power of a God who revives and revitalizes.
“I came that they may have life and have it abundantly” (John 10:10).
I am very pleased that so many of you take the time to be renewed and enriched by the
many excellent workshops, keynotes, liturgical celebrations and opportunities to con-
nect which are offered throughout the weekend. Your leadership and faithful participa-
tion is admirable especially in these challenging times. You are gift and blessing to our
parish communities of faith.
Please be assured of my ongoing support and encouragement as you so generously
share the “Good News” of our Catholic story and tradition.
Asking God’s blessing on you, your families and your parish communities,
Sincerely yours in Christ,

His Eminence,
Cardinal Roger Mahony
Archbishop of Los Angeles

WELCOME

March 2010

It is always a joy to welcome you to yet another wonderful Congress. The weekend offers
many opportunities to gather reflect and recommit to proclaiming the richness of our Sacred
Story.
Our theme, “Incredible Abundance,” inspired by the Scripture readings of the fifth Sunday
of Lent, speaks of God’s gracious abundance flowing out in acts of love and mercy. In Jesus
the forces of death and despair are overcome, stones and grit that block the stream of life are
removed and new life emerges. Embracing this incredible abundance we believe that it is never
too late for God to invigorate and renew a person, a church, a world.
As you will recall, a Religious Education Endowment Fund has been established in the Archdio-
cese of Los Angeles for the ongoing education and formation of Directors of Religious Education,
Adult Educators, Young Adults and Youth Ministers. The fund is currently enabling 10 students to
pursue a master’s degree in Religious Education. Your gift offering at the 2009 Congress Saturday
night liturgies added $40,207 to this fund. We also thank those who made a special contribution to
the endowment with their online registration.

We are blessed by the variety of offerings, inspiring liturgical celebrations, entertainment and
multicultural expressions provided. You are encouraged to walk the labyrinth, participate in
the Sacrament of Reconciliation or spend quiet moments in our contemplative Sacred Space.
Mindful of our common responsibility to care for the earth and all of God’s creation, our
“Green Space” will provide resources and opportunities to exchange ideas and join efforts in
this most important enterprise.
Thank you again for your presence, your faithful participation and for the hope that you so
generously share with your communities of faith. I look forward to greeting you throughout
these days of “Incredible Abundance.”
Sincerely,

Sister Edith Prendergast, RSC

Archdiocesan Director

Marzo, 2010

Pido a Dios abundantes

Hna. Edith Prendergast, RSC

What does this challenge by Teilhard de Chardin mean for us today, and for the

CONGRESS 2010 PROCLAMATION
“Let Us Be Blessed”
by ValLimar Jansen and Noni Limar

Let us be ...
Blessed and held in the warm embrace of Love
We celebrate God’s incredible, infinite abundance
Brilliant miracles of life shine before our eyes
“There is no place where God is not”
Every face, every sweep of wind or flicker of flame
Every pebble, stone, rock or mountain
Every drop of everlasting living water is overflowing
With God’s magnificent presence
Abundant Peace
Abundant Mercy
God’s Abundant Love
Incredible Abundance
Our God, abundant “Living Water”
Low clouds reach down
Wipe the chaos from our brows
When levees break or the roaring sea invades solid ground
We are lifted to the highest limb of trees
Sanctified in Christ’s holy sacrifice
Tears flooding ducts
Inundating heart and soul
Releasing sorrow and joy
Initiating abundant well be-ing
Abundant water pouring out
An oasis in every desert

Arena
A wellspring to every parched soul and flint-hard heart
Our God, “The Light” in abundance
A light in the dust-soaked darkness
A light in the ruin
We celebrate God’s abundant mercy
Hearts filled with compassion in disaster
When the mountains fall into the sea or buildings buckle
As sorrow wails out from the helpless throats of children
We are the body of Christ
Hands made steel, pulling our brothers and sisters
From the clutches of shadow
Legs oak-rooted in the Word of Love
Our God, “The Life” in abundance
Eternal life amongst the dead
We share “The Life” through our riches
With work, toil, sweat
We are God’s wealth given
To every shadowy recess
God’s life in abundance
Comforting the despairing, mournful heart
Calling forth the lost human spirit
Living as Christ
“Living Abundance”
Promise of everlasting life
Abundant Peace
Abundant Mercy
God’s Abundant Love
Incredible Abundance
Through Christ’s love
This is the promise given
Let us be blessed

POST-COMMUNION MEDITATION
Only Faith Can I Go On John Angotti

How can I tell him? How can I explain?

He’ll never understand this will cause him so much pain.
Who would ever believe me?
God what have you done?
Will you stand by me when they desert me?
Will you stand by me when I have Your Son?

ENDOWMENT CONTRIBUTORS
The Religious Education Endowment Fund was established by the Office of Religious Education to support the on-going
training and formation of religious education leaders, particularly by making scholarships available for the ongoing edu-
cation and formation of Directors of Religious Education, Adult Educators, Young Adults and Youth Ministers to pursue
graduate studies. It is our hope that every Director of Religious Education and Director of Youth Ministry will be given
the opportunity to receive a master’s degree in Religious Education/Religious Studies.
Those who registered online could contribute to this Fund, as well as those who made an additional contribution through
mail-in registrations. As of Febraury 23, 642 people responded with contributions totaling $9,950. We sincerely appreciate
and acknowledge their contributions. The Fund is currently enabling 10 students to pursue a master’s degree in Religious
Education, and you will be happy to know that several have already graduated!
