Enjoyment-ofourgardens,ourclubs, undour environmentBy DavidHealy,Director,DistrictITheFebruary snowpocalypsehas beenhard ongardens,gardeners,andgardenclubs.Whatever wasstirringin ourgardenwasinundatedwith snow, the2+feet thatfell and another2+ feetfrom clearingthewalks and havingnowhere elsetoputit. Ourprivetwas bentoverrepeatedly.Several timesduringthe stormswe had todigitoutorshaketoff.The stormsweregenerallyharshto buddingandbloomingcamellias.Many report damageo treesand shrubs,ncludingoneofthe AmericanHollies thatweplantedastfall in the memorialgloveat ProspectHill Cemetery.(We'llwaituntilwe're more alongin the springthawtoassesshat dxnageand decidewhethertoreplace it.)Manyclubs wereforced to cancel orreschedulemeetings.Even whenthe streetsand roadswere opelLtherewas ice to contendwith and agenerallack ofparking.At its Decembermeeting, the board ofthe NationalCapitalArea GardenClubs,Inc., acceptedmymotionfor a review ofthe state's expendituresandrevenue.This reviewprocesssunderway thisspring andonelikely result will beThe Capital Gardenerbecomingane-mail attachmentin thesame mannerasTheGardenPost.TheDistrict I Awards Meetingis scheduledor 10:30a.m.,Thursday, March11,n the auditoriumof theUSNational Arboretum.With anyluck, the snowwill begoneandspringwill be afoot.The DistrictI bus trip toNemours on May23 is sold out,but AnnGardenhouris stillmaking awaitinglistforanyreserved seatshat become availablebeforethen.
