Literature
This year you will study literature. Mom and Dad have selected a list of classic books.
You will choose from the list and read books. After completing a book you will take a
test. Your grade each quarter will be determined by the number of pages you read.
Here’s how it will work. You’ll choose a book and begin reading. If you decide the
book is boring you can quit reading it and select a different book. Once you complete a
book, you will let Mom know and she’ll provide you with a test to take. If you pass the
test, Mom will record the number of pages in the book. Large type books will not count.
If you read a book with large type, Mom will find the same book with a normal size type
and use that number of pages. At the end of each quarter, the number of pages recorded
will determine your grade. Pages will only be recorded for books which were completed
and for which you’ve passed a test. A quarter is about 9 school weeks.
This means to get an A, all you have to do is read about 22-23 pages each school day,
plus pass the tests on the books you read. That shouldn’t be too hard for a great reader
like you! Of course, if you spend a week working on a book and then quit reading it
before you finish, those pages won’t count and you’ll have to read more on other days.
In addition to reading, when your siblings get to the point in their writing books that they
are memorizing poetry, you will need to choose a poem to memorize. Some suggested
poems are listed after your list of books.
We are hoping to introduce you to many different authors through their literature.
Because of this, you should not choose more than one book per author.
Additionally, there are several short stories you may enjoy. Rather than a quiz, you will
need to write a narration of these. Your narration will not need to be long, but will need
to show that you did indeed read the story. These short stories are not listed on the
literature list, but you could find them in a book we have that is a collection of short
stories. Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart” is included here after the poetry.
