The Elements of Effective Feedback
How to Give It, How to Receive It
Is Anybody Really Listening?
When you’re giving feedback, do you feel your comments are being ignored? When you’re
receiving feedback, does it seem like the person giving it hears your viewpoint?Get the most from feedback sessions
—
whether you’re on the giving end or the receiving end
—
by practicing the skills listed below. Pick one or two each week and concentrate on performing
those well. After a few weeks, we bet you’ll find your feedback sessions are easier, and more
productive, too!
Giving Feedback
Here are some tips on how to give feedback:
Praise publicly, critique in private.
Concentrate on the behavior, not the personality.
Critique appropriately based on skill level standards; for example, don’t expect a
newhire to perform like a seasoned employee.
Focus on the cause and related effect.
Ask questions and listen so you thoroughly understand the situation from the
employee’s point of view.
Indicate the specific change in behavior you want and how it leads to the desiredoutcome.
Frame the feedback in emotionally neutral terms.
Support your message through your tone, gestures, and body language.
Get buy-
in from the recipient; e.g. “Yes, I will do this by Monday.”
Document your feedback session.Give feedback regularly
—
every day is not too often! And don’t worry, it may feel uncomfortableat first, but you’ll improve with practice. And the b
est part is, people will respond to yourfeedback
—
especially if you praise liberally!
