ThisyearmarksmythirdanniversaryastheDirectoroftheNevadaDepartmentofWildlife,andIamstillproudandamazedatthesheriesresourcestheSilverStatehastooffer.DespitebeingthedrieststateintheUnion,Nevadaoffersadiverseselectionofwatersforyoutoenjoy.Tobeginwith,therearebackcountrylakesandstreams.Theseremotewatersmayrequireyoutohike,buttheyofferthepeaceandserenitymanyanglersseek.AgreatexampleofthisisMarletteLakeintheSierras,whichisfeaturedinthispublicationonpage14.Urbanwatersofferagreatwayforcity-dwellinganglerstoshwithouttravelingtoofarfromhome.Theyofferthechancetoshafterwork,honeyourshingskills,pickupanicemeal,ortotakethekidsshing.RiverssuchastheCarson,Truckee,Humboldt,andWalkeroffernearbyshingforseveralsmallandlargecommunitiesalongtheirpath.Theagency,withcooperationandencouragementfromlocalgovernments,hasdevelopednumerousshingpondsintownsandcitiesaroundthestate.Troutandcatsharetheprimaryshstockedintheseponds.Itisexcitingtoannouncetheadditionoftwonewurbanshingponds,FujiParkPondinCarsonCityandCrystalPeakParkPondinVerdi,bothwillopentoshingin2010.Therearemanywatersaroundthestatethatoffergreataccessforlaunchingboats,camping,shing,andotherrecreationalactivities.ThesemayincludelargerlakesandreservoirssuchasLakesMeadandMohaveintheSouthernRegionofthestate;RubyMarshesandWildhorseandSouthForkReservoirsintheEasternRegion;RyePatchandLahontanStateParksandWalkerandPyramidLakesintheWesternRegion.Thereareafewnewregulationsthisyearthatanglersneedtobeawareof.Please,taketimetoreadthroughthispublication,orvisitthedepartmentwebsiteatwww.ndow.orgformoreinformation.IcertainlyhopeyouenjoyshingthemanydiversesheriesthatNevadahastooffer.Fisheriesstaffrelygreatlyontheinformationyouprovide,especiallyfromlakesideorstreamsidedrop-boxesandthesurveyformyoumayreceiveinthemail.Pleasetakethetimetollthemoutthoroughly.Remember,beresponsibleandsafewhenboatingonNevadawaters.Sincerely,KennethE.Mayer,Director NevadaDepartmentofWildlife
