CNU TESOL Certificate Program

Program syllabus
Spring 2010

Welcome to CNU TESOL. CNU TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other


Languages) Certificate Program has been developed by the Language
Education Center, Chungnam National University, in cooperation with the
CESL, at the University of Arizona. The purpose of the program is to provide a
quality TESOL program to pre-service and in-service teachers of English in
Daejeon and regional communities.

Course goals: By the end of this program, participants will


understand, articulate, demonstrate, and effectively evaluate:
1. The fundamental models of second language acquisition
2. Theory and the pedagogical methods of such models
3. The capability to apply understanding of language learning
and teaching in the form of practical lesson plans and activities in
the classroom.
4. The practical application of the TESOL training program
and practicum experiences to the classroom.
Expectations: Students who participate in this class will be expected
to do the following:

1. Participate in our English only policy


2. Complete both offline classes at LEC, CNU and the online
component in cooperation with the CESL (Center for English as a
Second Language), the University of Arizona
3. Prepare and present between 6 and 7 small presentations: one
for each module.
4. Complete all activities and assignments
5. Attend classes

Information: 100 hour offline component:


Morning class (Monday & Wednesday):
10:00 am-11:15 am
15-minute break
1:30-12:45 pm
Evening class (Tuesday & Thursday):
6:30 pm-7:45 pm
15-minute break
8:00 pm-9:15 pm

Information: 50 hour online component by the CESL

Module 1: Second Language Acquisition Theory (8 clock


hrs): Participants in this course will review basic language
acquisition principles, terminology, models and theories.
Module 2: Language Teaching Methodologies (8 clock hrs):
This course reviews contemporary language teaching
methodologies and considerations for classroom application.
Module 3: Curriculum & Materials Design (8 clock hrs):
Participants will focus on curriculum planning via syllabus
design, task planning and materials creation or adaptation.
Module 4: Pedagogical Grammar & Metalinguistic
Awareness (8 clock hrs): This course will review basic
grammatical concepts alongside linguistic components as they
relate to instruction.
Module 5: Formal & Informal Assessment Techniques (8
clock hrs): This course will present fundamental concepts and
considerations for global and local language testing &
evaluation.
Module 6: Computer Aided Language Learning (CALL) (7
clock hrs): This technology and teaching course will introduce
participants to language teaching software and web resources.
Module 7: Final Exam & Considerations for Job Placement
(3 clock hrs)
