1st Aliya:
This rst Aliya concludesthe details of the Mishkan’sconstruction. The Bnai Yisroel arecommanded to give the half Shekeltoward a national census and thepurchasing of the public oerings.The copper washstand, the Kiyor, isdescribed along with the ingredientsand laws of the anointing oil andthe Ketores - the incense. Betzallel,the grandson of Chur and great-grandson of Miriam, is identiedas the chief artisan and architectof the Mishkan. (Note: he was only13 yr. old!) The Mitzvah of Shabbosis commanded. Its juxtaposition tothe details of the Mishkan providesthe Gemara with the source fordetermining the 39 categories ofMelacha prohibited on Shabbos.
2nd Aliya:
The story of the GoldenCalf is told. Moshe ascended Sinaion the morning of Sivan 7, andremained 40 days and nights. The7th didn’t start with a night, so itwasn’t included in the total of 40.The Jews mistakenly assumed thatit was to be included and expectedMoshe back on the morning ofTamuz 16. Instead, he returned themorning of Tamuz 17. By middayof the 16th, the Jews were alreadydesperate. Chur aempts to reasonwith them and is killed. Theyapproach Aharon who aempts toredirect their terror which results inthe Golden Calf. Moshe appears thenext morning, breaks the Luchos,marshals the tribe of Levi, and 3000people are killed. Moshe demandsHashem’s forgiveness for the people, but moves the Ohel Moed out fromthe midst of the camp. Yehoshuais proclaimed the main student ofMoshe.
3rd & 4th Aliyot:
Moshe requeststo understand Hashem’s systemof justice. He is granted a greaterunderstanding of Hashem thanany other person in history, but isdenied the ability to comprehenddivine justice.
5th Aliya:
Moshe is instructed tocut two new Luchos and ascendSinai. Moshe is taught the secretformula for Teshuva (the ThirteenNames of G-d as He Manifests HisMercy) (34:6) and G-d forgives theBnai Yisroel.
6th Aliya
: Hashemestablishes a new covenant with thepeople. He forewarns them againstthe inuences of assimilation andintermarriage and forbids themto make any treaties with theinhabitants of Canaan. The holidaysof Pesach, Shevout, and Succos arereviewed, as well as Shabbos andthe basic law of Kashrus.
7th Aliya:
Moshe remains on Sinai
Note: The Shabbos Torah Reading is divided into 7 sections. Each section is called an Aliya [literally: Goup] since for each Aliya, one person “goes up” to make a bracha [blessing] on the Torah Reading.
