founder of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, who perhaps saw the
strategic role of Peshawar in his mind, on April the 12th, 1948, while addressing
the students and teachers of the Islamia Collage Peshawar, made the following
memorable statements:

perform the inauguration of the University of Peshawar. This is a
historic day for the people of this province and for Islamia College
which has been the center of learning for such a long time and
which has played an important part in the creation of the
University. The Government and the people of the province can

Annual Report 2005-06 Co-Curricular Activities
The students of the University of Peshawar are amongst the three percent of the
privileged ones in Pakistan who have been given the opportunity to pursue
higher education. Apart from maintaining a good standard of education, the
University of Peshawar also aims at encouraging students to participate in co-
curricular activities to inculcate in them the spirit of serving humanity and indulge
them in healthy activities. Student societies are the principle vehicles through
which the various activities on the campus are triggered, give vent to the
students feeling and enhance the vision of the youth in nation building process.
Khyber Literary Club was established in 1986 as the pioneer society. Its legal
status was recognized in 1994 by the Supreme Court of Pakistan. Later on with
the passage of time, nine more societies were established, namely
Adventure/Hiking Club, Blood Donor Society, Creative art Society, Culture and
dramatic society, Khyber Literary Club, Peshawar University Rifle association,
Science Society, Social Welfare and Awareness Society and Sports Society.
Recently one more society has been formed under the dynamic leadership of the
Provost University of Peshawar Dr. M. Farooq Swati. The credit of organizing the
pioneer society goes to Mr. Sher Bahadar Khan the Registrar of Peshawar

Mashaal has been the only Magazine, which provides a source of expression to
students of the University. Unfortunately, due to some reasons the Magazine
never came to the forefront since 1987. The SWAS accepted the challenge of
“Lighting Mashaal once again” as it started work on the compilation of material
from the students and staff of the University. The Provost, Prof. Dr. Farooq Swati,
must be accredited for extending all his support to the SWAS members for
compilation, composing and printing of Mashaal Magazine for the session 2005-
06.
Students Editors of SWAS and the Staff Editors of the Magazine are working day
and night in giving a final touch to the Mashaal and very soon the students will
find their favourite magazine in their hand. This will be the single most important
achievement of SWAS during the current session.

Depletion of ozone layers has become a hanging sword for the life on this earth.
Expert believe that the most serious of all environmental threats faced by
humanity today is the continuous depletion of the ozone layers in the sky, which
provide a natural protection against the dangerous ultra-violet rays of the sun.
In order to make the people aware of this issue, the world community observes
14th of September each year as Ozone Day. The Social Welfare and Awareness
Society, in collaboration with the Department of Environmental Sciences,

Teachers are the builders of the nations and the un-sung heroes of society. They
are entrusted with the holy job of educating and preparing the young generation
to play their role in effective way for the development of society. It is unfortunate
that in many cases, the role of teachers is under-estimated and taken for
granted.
Teachers inside and out side the campus who received appreciation cards and
‘thank you calls’ from the students very much appreciated the idea. Many
teachers personally contacted the Organizer of SWAS to appreciate the efforts of
the Social Welfare and Awareness Society.
