Back in January, the snow arrived which caused allof us a lot of extra work and altered many plans. Inspite of up to fifty inches of snow in the area, wewere able to hold our monthly concert at Goodwillon February 13. We had a light attendance for agreat show by
Danny Paisley and SouthernGrass
, but considering everything, it was a success-ful night. Many of our regular show attendeessouth of York were still snowed in and unable toattend. Hopefully the weather will cut us a break from here on and we can look forward to filling thehall in March for
Darren Beachley and Legendsof the Potomac
. They have a great new band andyou do not want to miss this show. Also, we are looking into the possibility of holdingan additional show in the future at The Forum inHarrisburg. This is just in the talking stages, as of now. As a 501C-3 non-profit group we can rent theForum very reasonably and this would enable us toattract a really top name band to play for us, such as
The Grascals, Steeldrivers,
or
Dailey & Vincent
.
These are bands that we cannot afford at our presentlocation because of a small capacity hall. The Forum seats eighteen hundred people and thereis not a bad seat in the house. There are three park-ing decks in a two to three block area, a large free parking lot on the state capital grounds directly be-hind the Forum, and unlimited free parking on thestreets after 5PM. It is in the downtown Capital dis-trict of Harrisburg. Restaurants and entertainmentarea and is safe, well lit, and the Capital Police arealways a presence.I would appreciate any comments any of our mem- bership may have concerning this possible event. Many considerations and logistics need to beworked out before this can become a reality , but I believe that this would be entertaining and benefi-cial to the SMBA.Dick Beckley,SMBA PresidentMy first month and a half as your new President hasreally been a baptism in the process of running our organization.First, we had the largest attendance in our historyfor the
Steep Canyon Rangers
concert in January. All seats were filled, even after commandeering allthe chairs the fire house had in their offices, trainingroom and anywhere else. Also in January, we had our monthly jam and openhouse at our new location in Marysville. TheMarysville-Rye Senior Center welcomed our largestcrowd in recent memory with sixty-two attendees. Itappears that the new location is very appealing toSMBA members and to the community as well.Door prizes were handed out to many attendees.I would like to thank Carole Bishard and volunteersfrom the Senior Center who prepared meals and re-freshments for those in attendance. I’d also like tothank Bob Bishard and Bill Aldinger for their work on this project. Thank you also to Jan Woods for thewonderful fruit arrangement she so generously do-nated to the occasion. It was truly, a work of art.The February jam drew an even larger crowd, withseventy-four people in attendance, includingtwenty-six pickers. With warmer weather comingwe’ll have an opportunity to hold the jams indoorsand outdoors as well.We do have some growing pains to work out andmore information will be announced about that inthe upcoming newsletters and the website. We ask for your patience and welcome your comments.
