Proper Practice Procedures and Good Habit Building
Many times students o all ages and experience lack proper practice habits, they never achieve theregoals because o this act I would like to mention some o the most important points. The ollowing applies to all instruments. When a student frst starts learning an instrument it can take rom 2 to 3 months to develop a practicediscipline. What that means is parents will many times say “my child doesn’t practice enough” or “Idon’t want to pay or lessons i they are not going to practice every day”. The point here is that until astudent develops a practice habit—THEY WILL NOT NATURALLY PRACTICE EVERY DAY!Until it is developed with weekly lessons, positive encouragement and time! I capitalize this becauseso many students believe that this should be a nature habit that every one has. Parents many timesstop themselves or their child rom lessons without allowing them the time to grow into a good musicstudent! This takes great patience, personal discipline and commitment to allow or this habit to develop andthen become part o the student’s daily lie routine! Just the same way you learn to read, write, play sports, eat a proper diet and exercise. Most peopleorget how much time and reinorcement was given to them in the early stages o reading and mannersand most things we NOW take or granted. So beore you give up on your child or your sel remember the six month rule. Most things in lie likesports, proper diet, working out - takes about six months to becoming a habit. Make a realistic goal orthe student to practice undisturbed or a minimum o twenty minutes two to our times a week - that is agreat start. Then within a couple o months expand practice time to 30 minutes a session. Then withinthree to six months the student should practice thirty minutes three to fve times a week. More on thisnext time. Thanks or reading! And don’t orget to apply these principles. All the best,
 Vince Lauria
