Did you ever wonder
. . .
about some of the seemingly odd questions you are askedwhen in different places of business? Clearly I have and here is a fine example of a recent experience Ihad with a copy center that shall remain nameless.I went to a copy center a couple of weeks back to get 100 copies made. A line of people stood in front ofme, so I decided to run the copies myself. Ran one copy~poor quality. Got back in line. I explained to theemployee behind the counter that I wanted to get 100 copies but that the self-service machines were notacceptable quality. She said, “Llets go over here.” She was leading me back to the machine from which I just ran the unacceptable test copy.I told her that I wanted better quality. “You'll have to come back later to pick up better quality copies,” she said. “No worries,” I said. The em-ployee then said, “I'll run a test copy from one of the professional quality machines.” Which she did. When she showed me the test copy ithad black toner spots all over the copy. I looked at her, looked back down at the “proof” and said, “This isn't good. I can't have black spots allover the copies.”I wish I would have had a camera to see my own face for this next part. “Well, you'll need to fill out this piece of paper requesting no blackspots.” Honestly, I looked around to see if I was on Candid Camera. I said, “Seriously?” As she put an

where I was to write my request, Iasked, “What am I supposed to say?” Inconvenienced and without humor, she said, “That you don't want black spots on your copies.”So I wrote “No black spots on the copies, please,” and then the employee said, “Make sure you sign your name.” Which I did. She asked meif I wanted to pay right then. “I prefer to pay when I pick up the copies,” I said.I returned the following day to pick up the copies and the manager of the store (so said his name tag) waited on me. I asked, "Is it customaryto have to ask that the copies not have black spots?" He said, "No," as he ran my credit card. I said, "I had to make awritten request yesterday that I didn't want black spots." He said, "That's not a written request it is just the instructionsyou are giving to the person who runs the copies." Is it me? “Oh, well, thank you,” I said and left the store.When I got home, I discovered inside the box of “spotless” copies, the piece of paper I’d filled out requesting no spots.Written across the test copy was:
Customer requests no spots.
I have the proof. Next time I go out to order soup, Iplan on requesting a bowl.

Brick Oven Courtyard Grille will give you a $10.00 gift certificate for helpingsupport our community by donating to Working Class Hero Fund. Go to
for more information.
Working Class Hero Fundis a newly established organization founded on the tenet thatthere are many good, hard working people in today’s society that experience traumaticevents that leave them unable to meet basic necessities. While these individuals wouldchoose not to seek charity, they find themselves in an unenviable position of needing assistance, and thenfind that they do not meet guidelines of more traditional providers.WCHF will provide crisis funding for local individuals that can prove they are gainfully employed and canshow need. Participants must be able to articulate what circumstances caused the crisis, and what stepsthey plan to take to prevent similar circumstances from occurring again. Funds will not be distributed to theindividuals, but directly used to resolve the immediate crisis. Participants will not be asked to repay theamount, but will be asked to sign an ethical contract that will require that they somehow “pay forward” thegood will assistance that was given to them. That “pay it forward” can be as simple as helping a friend inneed, mowing the lawn of an elderly neighbor, or volunteering at a local non-profit.
