A brief reaction paper that argued the age old question of which factor attributes more to the development of personality, nature or nurture. In this case, I studied the life of Kanye West and his mom.

Nature Versus Nurture: A Glimpse Into...Kanye West2IntroductionRapper/Producer/Fashion Critic Kanye West always believed he would be a superstar andhis current success at the tops of music charts proves his affirmation to be true. The question is:Is his remarkable success attributed to the genes he inherited or are they a result of theenvironment in which he was raised? The debate over the direct influence of nature versusnurture has been widely debated throughout psychology circles for centuries. The nature versusnurture issue involves the degree to which genetic or hereditary influences (nature) andexperiential influences (nurture) determine the kind of person you are. (Kail & Cavanaugh,2007)Since West was raised in a home by a devoted scholar and PhD recipient, one wouldassume that he would grow up to become a scholar just like his mother. That was not the case.West made satisfactory grades throughout his academic career and even changed colleges beforeeventually dropping out to pursue his music career. In her memoir, Raising Kanye (West & Hunter, 2007), Kanye’s mother, Dr. Donda Westwrote that she always encouraged Kanye to establish a sound academic career but his musicinterest in music overshadowed that and while she didn’t approve, she didn’t stand in his wayand even supported his musical endeavors. When he dropped out of school she allowed him tostay at home and work on improving his skills as a producer. She also supported him financiallyand emotionally when he moved to New Jersey to be closer to prime record labels and musicexecutives. In this sense, her ability to nurture her son’s passion led to his success. Theunderlying understanding is that West may have been equally as intelligent as his mother; he

Nature Versus Nurture: A Glimpse Into...Kanye West3simply chose a different medium of expression for his talents, hence the equal representation of nature and nurture. If his mother had been a musician, she may have been equally as successful as he has been, but her talents were directed toward academia where she excelled as a professor atnumerous schools of higher learning.West’s success in his music career can be attributed to his intellectual predisposition andaffinity for learning as well as the environment in which he was raised where he saw a womanwho was passionate about her life direction and willing to go to great lengths to establish her success. His innate ability to do the same, led to being awarded nine Grammy’s and numerousmagazine cover spreads including Time magazine.
