The Mr.

Puffy Tea Cozy

The Mr. Puffy Tea Cozy is a simple and fun tea cozy designed to celebrate the
memory of our little beagle, Mr. Puffy who passed in 2010. He loved tea time
and I think he would approve.

Size:

This pattern will fit most round 4 cup teapots. The finished cozy measures 8” at
the base and 6” high. However, the pattern is simple to adjust in size by adding
or subtracting a pattern repeat (to change width) or by adding additional rows (to
add or subtract height). Each pattern repeat is comprised of 4 stitches and is
worked over 4 rows.

Materials:

Two contrasting color aran to worsted weight yarn and small amounts of similar
weight yarn for the flower embellishment.

The sample shown in the picture above was knit on US 8 needles. The dark
green base is Retro by Noro (aran weight) and the light green top is Noblesse by

1
Zitron (sport weight – 2 strands were held together). The flower is knit from
scrap yarn of similar weight.

US 8 needles: Tea Cozy

US 4 needles: Flower Embellishment

Bramble Pattern Stitch:

Row 1: (right side) purl

Row 2: [kpk, p3tog]
Row 3: purl
Row 4: [p3tog, kpk]

Pattern Notes:

The pattern is worked from the bottom to the top and the front and back are each
worked separately. A slip stitch is worked along each edge to aid seaming. I
recommend using a dark color on the bottom to reduce chance of tea stains
showing. The Flower Embellishment is worked separately and sewn on top.

Using US 8 needles and darkest color CO 34 stitches using long tail method.

Base:
1st row (wrong side): knit
2nd – 4th rows: knit
5th row: purl

Begin bramble pattern stitch:

1st Repeat:
Row 1: (right side) purl
Row 2: sl1, [kpk, p3tog], k1
Row 3: purl
Row 4: sl1, [p3tog, kpk], k1

2nd and 3rd Repeats: work even (i.e. work rows 1-4 twice)

4th Repeat:
Row1: Purl
Row 2: *Change to light color* and do not slip 1st stitch: k1, [kpk, p3tog], k1
Row 3: Purl
Row 4: s1, [p2tog, kpk], k1

5th Repeat: work even (i.e. work rows 1 – 4 once)

2
6th Repeat: Begin Decreases as follows:

Row 1: Decrease 8 stitches as follows: P1 [p, p2tog,p] P1. 26 stitches remain

Row 2: pattern across as usual: s1,[ kpk, p3tog] K1
Row 3: Decrease 6 stitches as follows: P1 [p, p2tog, p] P1. 20 stitches remain
Row 4: Decrease 5 stitches as follows: [p3tog, kp (note: you only make 2
increases instead of 3)] 5 times. 15 stitches remain

7th Repeat:

Row 1: Decrease 3 stitches as follows: [p2, p2tog] to last 3 stitches purl to end.
12 stitches remain.

Row 2: p3tog 4 times. 4 stitches remain. Place stitches on holder.

When both front and back are completed use a tapestry needle to pull through
the 8 remaining stitches (4 from front and 4 from back) and pull tight. Do not
weave in ends until washed and blocked. Use yarn tails to seam front and back
together leaving an open area for the tea spout and tea handle to poke through.
Note: Alternatively you can BO the last 4 stitches and simply seam the top
together when sewing the pieces together.

Flower Embellishment:

Petals:
Make 4 petals as follows:

Using US 4 needles CO 2 stitches

Row1: k1, m1, k1 (3 stitches)

Row2: kfb, k1, kfb (5 stitches)
Row3: kfb, k3, kfb (7 stitches)
Row4: seed stitch across (i.e. k1, p1)
Rows 5 - 7: work even in seed stitch
Row8: Decrease 1st stitch using a ssk decrease and work seed stitch across.
Rows 9-12: Continue as for row 8 working a decrease at the start of the row and
working seed stitch across.
Row 13: ssk (last 2 stitches). 1 stitch remains. BO last stitch.

Flower Center:

The center is a 7 stitch bobble worked as follows:

Using US 4 needles CO 1 stitch – VERY LOOSELY

Row1: Increase as follows: [ k1,p1] 7 times. 1 stitch increased to 7 stitches.

3
Row2: knit across 7 stitches
Row3: purl across 7 stitches
Row4: k1 [decrease 4 stitches: slip 1 stitch k4tog, pass slipped stitch over] k1. 3
stitches remain
Row5: p3tog

BO and tie yarn ends together ( the two hanging ends) to form a rounded bobble.

Sew petals together using matching embroidery thread and then sew flower
center in the middle. Attach flower embellishment to tea cozy.

Caveat:

This tea cozy was knit 4 times by me and I’ve tried to be as accurate as possible
writing up the pattern instructions. But, I’m human and may have made a
mistake. If you find a mistake, please let me know so I can correct it and please
accept my apology in advance.

If you have any questions, please email Claudia at cjbjdcpa@aol.com. I would
