Putting a Face on Doctrinehere are those who oppose prophecy in the local Church either because of lackof Biblical knowledge or because they have seen abuses of that gift. However,the Bible itself supplies the perfect answer to the question why prophesy.
1Corinthians 14:5
states, “I would that ye all spoke with tongues but rather that yeprophesied; for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaks in tongues, excepthe interpret, that the Church may receive edifying.”

When the Apostle Paul uses the term “greater” he refers to usefulness not stationor position. Frankly, all the gifts of the Spirit are for usefulness not to enhance theone who exercises the gift. Is this gift of prophecy needed today? To answer thatquestion, one need only to look at the Church in general today to note its lack of power, its negative approach to life and dependence on the world system to give aresounding, yes!Let us look at
1st Corinthians verse 3
to see the purposes of prophecy in the localchurch: “But he that prophesieth, speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation,and comfort.”

Looking at thesetwo Scriptures, we now have a fuller picture of the value of prophecy to themembership of the local Church.
