ABSTRACT
The importance of engaging SMEs in formal environmental management isincreasingly being recognised, especially due to the significance of the sectorscontribution to the UK’s economy and its potential to create environmental pollution.Environmental Management Systems (EMSs) are seen as a proactive tool foraddressing environmental impacts in businesses. BS8555 was launched officially in2003 as an EMS standard specifically designed with SMEs in mind. The objective of this research is to understand the process of implementing BS8555 and how thestandard could be improved further. An additional objective is to determine howsupport in Northern Ireland has been influential in the uptake of BS8555.In order to identify features of effective SME support and relevant issues surroundingthe effectiveness of BS8555, an extensive literature review was conducted whichenabled a structured interview schedule to be developed. SMEs which haveimplemented BS8555 and used support offered by the STEM project wereinterviewed about their experiences of BS8555 and the support offered.

The results show that the free support and guidance offered by the STEM project hasbeen pivotal in encouraging and enabling organisations achieve phase 3 of BS8555.However, the results suggest that once SMEs are engaged in the process of EMSimplementation, confidence in abilities grow and benefits start to be realisedinfluencing further progress, even though the support has ceased. The findingsconfirm that the staged approach utilised by BS8555 is effective in challenging manyof the traditional barriers faced by SMEs. However effective SME support isidentified as being integral to the standard’s success. The low level of recognitionreceived by organisations, and the robustness of BS8555 as a ‘stand alone’ standardare identified, as weaknesses of the approach.
