THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE ANTHROPOMETRICVARIABLES AND THE THROWING PERFORMANCE INHANDBALLSUMMARY
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationshipbetween the anthropometric characteristics of novice handballplayers and the throwing performance. Fifty-nine (59) volunteerswere evaluated for their throwing velocity with a radar gun. Theparticipants were asked to throw a competition handball against atarget that was set six (6) meters away. All subjects performedseven (7) maximal shots and the average was calculated.Concerning the anthropometric characteristics, the body height andthe length of the upper limb segments were measured (arm, forearm and hand length, arm span and hand width with the fingersabducted), and the body mass and body obese mass as well.Furthermore, the ratio of the body height to the arm span and thelean body mass were calculated. The results showed that thethrowing performance is significantly (p<0.05) and positivelycorrelated to the body mass, lean body mass, arm span, handlength and width of the hand with the fingers abducted. Additionally,a significant (p<0.05) negative correlation was found between thethrowing velocity and the ratio of the body height to the arm span. The findings of the current study suggest that the anthropometricdata and particularly the size of the hand should be seriouslyconsidered when criteria for the selection of a handball player areset.

There are many studies that investigated the development of the anthropometric parameters for handball players (Tittel andWutscherk 1974, Jeschke 1978, Cwik 1979, Diaczuk 1981, Eiben1982, Khosla 1983, Carter 1984, Seco 1993, Kotzamanidis etal.1995). According to these studies, during the last decades thereis a tendency among the elite handball players showing an increasein their height. Generally speaking, the elite handball players areheavier and taller than the average normal population (Dekkar et al.1988). On the other hand comparing the elite handball players tothe high performance athletes of other sports (football, basketball, hokey, judo and badminton), the handball athletes seem to besignificantly heavier, taller and with less obese mass than thehokey, judo and badminton ones (Mathur et al. 1985). Additionally, there are several studies that reported correlations betweenanthropometric characteristics and the position of the player duringthe game (Pires 1986, Seco 1993). More specifically, thegoalkeeper, the back players (inter) and the players on the 6m line(pivots) are significantly taller than the playmakers (center) andwing players (Seco 1993).However, the above mentioned studies concern the overallhandball playing ability of an athlete and not the correlation of theperformance of a specific on-court task to the respectiveanthropometric variables. By knowing this piece of information, it ispossible that athletes possessing a specific anthropometric profileare performing better (or worse) on a specific task. Theidentification of this profile for a particular skill may be helpful to thecoach in order to predict more accurately which players might havebetter odds for a better performance on this particular skill. It is generally accepted that in the case of handball thethrowing skill is one of the most important skills (Kornexl 1972,Kastner et al. 1978, Pauwels 1979, van Muijen et al. 1991). It iscrucial either for long passes or fast shots against the goalkeeper’snest. Concerning the effectiveness of shooting, it is strongly linkedto the ball release velocity and therefore there are several training
