OurpapertodaywilldiscussourrecentworkatanuplandbasininthesoutheasternCorinthiacalledLakkaSkoutara.Wewereinitiallydrawntothisbasininthesummer2001becauseitappearedtobeasettlementintheprocessofnucleationwithitssmallchurchsurroundedbyoveradozenhouseslooselyarrangedalongtheintersectionoftworuralroads.[SLIDE][SLIDE].Wenotedthatthehousesthroughoutthecountrysidewereinvariousstatesofrepair[SLIDE],collapse[SLIDE],andabandonment[SLIDE],makingthesiteanideallaboratoryforthestudyofarchaeologicalformationprocesses.Withthispotentialinmind,wereturnedlaterthatsummerwithagroupofarchaeologistswhowerepartofabroaderresearchprogramdesignedtodocumenttheEasternKorinthianlandscapefromtheIsthmusofKorinthtothebordersofEpidauria.Ifatfirstwethoughtofthesettlementasprototypicvillageabandonedintheprocessofnucleation,wehavenowhavecometoseeLakkaSkoutaraasafluidandsemi‐permanentsettlementwithinadynamicrurallandscape.[SLIDE]LakkaSkoutaraisoneofaseriesoffertileuplandbasinswhosefortunesandfunctionsshiftedthroughtimeinresponsetothechangingworldtowhichthevalleywasalwaysconnected.[SLIDE]Inearliertimes
