Pick Me, Pick Me

Derric Saville
November 1995

Peering from my shallow box,
no windows to the world,
lights are on, its time to woo,
another stranger's heart,
Pick me.

You look past my eyes,
I struggle to be seen,
I want for you to rescue me,
walking towards my shell,
Pick me, Pick me.

My voice fades amidst the clamorous noise,
scramble over my brothers,
get to the front, I must be seen,
I cannot tolerate this box life anymore,
Pick me, Pick me.

My daily ration long since gone,
a nauseating mess below,
I do not like the selection process,
my time here will soon be gone,
Pick me, Pick me.

The urgency of my plight,
overtakes my every thought,
I've been here near a month,
all the others before have gone,
Pick me, Pick me.

Your eyes meet mine,
my tongue adorns your face,
my tail bespeaks loudly of my happiness,
I'll be the best a dog can be,
just don't bring me back to this place,
where all the animals wail in fear,
Pick me, Pick me.

A wondrous romp of freedom,
to rollick in open fields of tender grass unknowing,
with gratitude and unerring devotion of spirit,
redeemed forever in your choice,
Pick me, Pick me.

I have never bought a pet. In over (ugh) 40 years I have adopted strays, adopted from shelters. I refuse to support kitty mills/puppy mills. Shelters often have time limits so it is so very important to adopt from there and save a life and make a friend or get a new family member. Great--sad--piece.
