© Sarajit Poddar, 2007
1-2. O excellent of the Brahmins, explained below is32 Nabhash Yogas, which have a total of 1800different varieties. These consist of 3 Asraya Yogas, 2 Dala Yogas, 20 Akriti Yogas and 7 Sankhya Yogas.
There are 32 Nabhash yogas narrated by venerableMaharishi Parashara. However with all thepermutations and combinations there could be 1800different varieties. The 32 Nabhash yogas aredistributed in following manner.1. Ashraya Yogas : 032. Dala yogas : 023. Akriti yogas : 204. Sankhya yogas : 07
Total : 32

Ashraya means resting place and has to do withthe nature of signs where the planets are placed.

Dala is a small shoot, leaf, or petal, as it unfolds.Hence these yogas determine the way the lifeunfolds for the native.

Akriti means “shape” and is based on the patternof placement of the planets in the horoscope.

Sankhya means number and is based on thenumber of signs the planets are placed in.
Monier Williams Sanskrit dictionary describes Nabhash assomething celestial or heavenly. As the name signifies, Nabhash yogas represent the combinations in a horoscope, due to placement of the planets in the sky in a particular  pattern. The formation of the pattern could be due to thenature of signs or the nature of the houses or in a particular shape. Based on the basis of formation of  pattern, the yogas are categorised into different groups asmentioned above. In these yogas only 7 planets participate, barring the nodes and represent the combined affect of the planets throughout the life of the native irrespective of thedasas. They form the fundamental formidable force whichguides the native through out his life and directly influencethe thought pattern of the native. Since all of us are slave of our thought process, these yogas assume utmost importance in horoscopic analysis and must be studied before forging ahead with analysis of different other areas.

All the signs in the zodiac are categorised into threecategories based on their level guna. Guna or inherentnature of the signs can be roughly equated to the levelof energy they posses. Movable signs havepreponderance of energy and are of Rajas guna, Fixedsigns have lack of energy and are of Tamas Guna andDual signs have a balance of energy compared to themovable and fixed signs and hence are of Sattvagunas. Based on the placement of the planets in thesings, these gunas predominate over the native, whichis the basis for the asraya yoga.Ashraya means resting place and hence implies thenature of he place where the planets are placed in.

Based on the predominance of the gunas, there arethree yogas which come into category namely, Rajju,Musala and Nala. One must keep in mind that it is very difficult to findhoroscope with exact yogas. These yogas present inall horoscopes to some extent and thus colour ournature. For example the qualities of Rajju Yoga canbe visible in natives whose most planets are inmovable signs, if not all. If four planets are placed inmovable and 3 are placed in fixed then the nativeshall have both the qualities of Rajju and Musala, however Rajju would dominate as more planets arethere in Movable signs.
Rajju Yoga:
 All planets in
movable signs
constitute this yoga.Rajju means rope and means the rope which binds thenative to this world. They have the energy of a newborn, who sees the world with new eyes and try toexplore everything they have access to. They aremostly materialistic in disposition and have a keendesire of achieving something great hence the nameRajju, which bind them to this material world. These signs are governed by Brahma, the creator andhence show their creative abilities. In short they canbe described as Pioneers.Vide verse 18, Maharishi Parashara describes thequality of people born under this yoga as someonewho is fond of wandering, be charming, will earn inforeign countries. He will also be cruel andmischievous.Due to preponderance of rajas guna or high energy, such native shall like to travel and shall gain theirfortune outside their birth place. The salient featuresfor natives born in this yoga are:

Love travelling

Prosper in foreign lands

Charming and enthusiastic

Full of energy and initiative

Pioneering spirit

Early adopters

Creative abilities

Lack perseverance and stability

Volatile and fickle minded

Have many new ideas however lack theability to see them through

Pushy and overbearing

Changing pattern and direction of life

Comes to bottlenecks while defyingestablished practices and try to change themor re-establish something new. Possiblythat’s why they might be viewed as Crueland mischievous.

They might face much opposition whileestablishing something new and hence itcomes quite distressful at times.
Musala Yoga:
This yoga is constituted by placement of all the 7planets in
fixed signs
. Musala means a pestle orgrinder which is used to grind something to finepaste. This captures the spirit of the yoga in a waythat, such persons do their best in following thecurrent practices without much questioning them ortrying to change them. They have fixity of purposeand don’t sway into different directions. In verse 19, Maharishi Parashara describes the qualityof people born under this yoga as someone who isendowed with honour, wisdom, wealth etc., be dearto king, famous, will have many sons and be firm indisposition. These signs are governed by Shiva, the eternal guruand hence the natives of this yoga are thoughtful, knowledgeable and followers of the guidelines of society.Due to preponderance of Tamas Guna or Lack of energy, such native always stick to the establishednorms of the time and follow them to their heart. Thesalient features for natives born in this yoga are:

Thoughtful

Energetic, however is security oriented. They are driven by the need for stability.

Attached to his duty

Firm disposition. Patient and perseverant

Stable, consistent in their effort

Endowed with honour, respect, wisdom andwealth

Do not question established practices andinitiate something new

Capable of doing great works

Blessed with happy family
Nala Yoga:
When all the 7 planets are placed in
dual signs
, thisyoga is formed. Unlike movable signs and dual signswhich show extremes in the level of energy, dualsigns are balanced and related to sustenance.

Nala means reed, which is a kind of grass whichgrows pretty fast and has multiple uses. Similar to thesymbol, the natives of this yoga are fast learner andare multi skilled. In verse 20, Maharishi pronounces the result of NalaYoga which is one born in Nala Yoga will haveuneven physique, be interested in accumulatingmoney, very skilful, helpful to relatives andcharming.Being the middle of Movable and fixed signs, characteristics of both kinds of signs are found inthese natives, however to certain extent only. Likemovable signs they are pioneering too, however onlyinside the boundary of established practices. Theycan better be described as reformers, than pioneers. They do see things in different light; however theydon’t see things which are completely outside theprevalent practice. The salient features of natives of this yoga are:

They malformed body. This is not clear whyMaharishi Parashara pronounces this result. However, it is expected that such natives canhave some deformity in their body.

Interested in accumulating money, sincedual nature is related to sustenance.

Multifaceted and multi-skilled personalities,to carry out reforms in the establishedpractices.

Shrewd, clever & intelligent, since they seethe things in different light and carry ontheir reforms without being at loggerheadswith the protectors of established practices.

Steady in their outlook like the fixed signs, however to a lesser extent.

Helpful to relatives

Medium life span, as dictated by the dualsigns. Movable signs signify the longestlifespan, fixed the shortest and dual ismiddling.

Attractive

Philanthropic, due to the nature of the sign, which is governed by Vishnu, the suatainer.

Balanced temperament

Practical to see that their ideas areimplemented without getting intologgerheads with others.

Creative to the extent of using the resourcesavailable to them creatively.
8. Maala and Sarpa Yogas. If 3 Kendras areoccupied by benefics, Maala Yoga is produced, whilemalefics so placed will cause Sarpa Yoga. TheseYogas, respectively, produce benefic and maleficresults.
Maala and Sarpa yogas are the two dala yogas whichinfluence the pattern of native’s life. It determines theway the life of a native unfolds as the name of theyoga suggests. Dala means small shoot, blade, petalleaf which unfold slowly and steadily with time.Moneir Williams dictionary suggests “unfoldingitself” as one of the meaning of the yoga.Since Kendra forms the 4 pillars or bastions of anyhoroscope and represent the four major directions inthe life of the native namely Dharma, Artha, Kama,Moksha, they have strong bearing on the overallcomfort or distress of a native’s life. Any beneficplaced in the Kendra forms the biggest support in thelife of the native, while a malefic placed over thereshows otherwise, which is lack of support andstruggle. Two different yogas in this category areMaala and Sarpa, which are detailed below:
Maala Yoga:
When 3 Kendras are occupied by benefics, this yogaoccurs. Though there are four benefics namelyJupiter, Venus, Mercury and Moon they cannotsimultaneously occupy four Kendras as Venus andMercury cannot be separated from each other bymore than 2 houses.Maala means a garland, which means that life of thenative is like a garland, where each bead is like aflower, which represents splendour, harmony andpeace.Maharishi Parashara in verse 21 describes the effectof this yoga as “One born in Maala Yoga will be everhappy, endowed with conveyances, robes, food andpleasures, be splendorous and endowed with manyfemales.”This indicates that the life of the native shall unfoldwith much happiness and pleasures. The native shallbe supported and helped by others in various junctureof his life. They get whatever they want withoutmuch struggle at the opportune time. They have thegood fortune of grasping the time at the right momentand making decisions at the right time, which areeventually fruitful. They are usually happy andcharming and shall make their surrounding happytoo. Since they do not have to struggle much, they arenaïve at heart and clean from ill feelings, such ashatred, jealously etc.
Sarpa Yoga:
This yoga is formed by placement of malefics in 3Kendras. Out of 7 planets four and benefics and threeare malefics, which are Saturn, Mars and the Sun.
