See the Holocaust through the eyes of a child who survived it and get to know him through the heart-wrenching and heart-warming stories in Neither Yesterdays Nor Tomorrows – Vignettes of a Holocaust Childhood. George Elbaum’s book is a series of 25 remembered episodes starting with his 3rd birthday in the Warsaw Ghetto during the Holocaust, then being smuggled out of the Ghetto by his mother, being moved from one family of strangers to another to hide from the Nazis, and years without knowing when or whether he’ll ever see his mother again. While her survival was due to “luck, strength, and wits,” his was due to sheer luck and situations such as hunger, which saved him from being exposed in a sweep by Nazi soldiers, and playing with a hand grenade and discarding it a few seconds before it exploded. This tenuous existence lasted till the war ended and was followed by his journey alone to France and back to Poland with a broken leg, then together with his mother to France, then arrival in the US and a new life as an American.
The book ends on an encounter with a Holocaust denier in Boston when the author was a freshman at MIT, and his reflections on the hopeful slogan “Never again!” However, the book’s very existence resulted from an epiphany in 2009 and, in turn, started an on-going lecture series in schools in America and Poland as documented in the author’s website www.NeitherYesterdays.com.
