THE FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT FOR BOXING IN YORKSHIRE
With the right support from local authorities and other partners amateur boxing in the Yorkshire ABA regioncan continue to develop, bringing great benefits to all those involved
Amateur boxing is more populartoday than it has been for many years, and whether that’s due to the success of Amir Khan at the 2004 Olympics, and hissubsequent high profile, or whether it’ssimply down to people being fed up withthe “cotton wool brigade” who don’t likeor understand boxing, the sport’sresurgence is confounding its critics. For the current momentum to bemaintained, and for participation levelsin all aspects of the sport to continue torise, amateur boxing clubs must receivetheir fair share of funding and grants toprovide decent facilities for our youngboxers to train and compete in, and tosupport that end the ABA is introducinginitiatives such as the new ClubmarkScheme (see page 3). I will try to includeinformation about such initiatives, designed to make life easier for clubs inthe long term, in future newsletters. The other purpose of this newsletter, which will be produced at least quarterly,is to highlight some of the greatachievements of the boxers and clubs inthe region, and the magnificent workdone by coaches, officials and theRegional Committee, and othersinvolved in the sport, including schools, universities, youth groups etc.I’m aware that this first editioncontains a lot about Sheffield, andthere’s a lot going on here, but I’d likefuture editions to include material fromall parts of the region. Finally I’d like to thank RegionalSecretary Eric Hoyland, and AnneHomyer of Sport England’s Step intoSport initiative, for their support inproducing this newsletter.

Danny Price - defeated in Athens, but did Yorkshire proud
The following report was taken fromthe ABAE’s website, and says all thatneeds to be said about brave Danny’sOlympic quest at the final Europeanqualifying event, in Athens on Monday 7th April:Westway ABC's Danny Price boxed aclassy first round with quick left leads andfast right hands following, but only cameaway with a one point lead when heshould have been four points up. A scrappy second round did seeHungary's Darmos Jozsef close the gap,but somehow the Hungarian found himselfwith a one point lead. Slaps andindeterminate swishes were scoring forJozsef, whilst the clean straight shots andclear thudding body punches of Price didnot move the computer at all.Danny should have kept his boxing atrange, he did allow Jozsef to hold inside, but still Price should have run out thewinner. Could Danny have done more?Yes. Should Danny have done more? Yes,but he still did more than enough to winthis contest.Beijing is not to be for the young, talented, Yorkshireman, but he has a bigfuture if he learns to use his considerableboxing skills and the reach advantage his6' 5" frame gives him. It is up to Danny torealise how good he is and how good hecan become.Terry Edwards, GB head coachasked: "Am I seeing something different?I'd be the first to coat Dan if I thought hehadn't performed, the judges weren'tscoring his shots and the Hungarian wasgetting points for everything he landedwhether right or wrong. I hate sounding somiserable, but neither of the heavys got afair shake tonight"From a Yorkshire point of view this isobviously a major disappointment, butwith Danny still dominating domesticallyat heavyweight, and massively talentedboxers like St Paul’s ABC’s LukeCampbell already performing superbly forGreat Britain at international level, everything looks good for the region beingrepresented at the London 2012 gamesand beyond. And don’t forget, femaleboxing looks likely to be included in the2016 Olympics - will a Yorkshire lass bringhome gold then?

The Clubmark Scheme
Lydney ABC of WesternCounties region is the firstboxing club in England tobe awarded the ABA Clubmark. The ClubmarkScheme is a best practiceguide that sets standardsof coaching, administrationand child protection for allclubs, and is a benchmarkfor quality.Clubmark is similar to theFootball Association’sCharter Standard Scheme, and to charter markschemes in many othersports. It is envisaged thatonly ten to twenty percentof boxing clubs will applyfor Clubmark in the firstyear or two of the scheme, but it is worth all clubsmaking themselves awareof the Clubmark criteria asthose that achieve thestandard will be given ahigher priority for fundingawards from the publicsector in the coming years. To support the initiative the ABA has taken thefollowing action:
Matthew Williamshas beenappointed asNational Club & Coach Officer andwill head theClubmarkprogramme.
Clubmarkresources will beavailable online onthe ABA websiteatwww.abae.co.uk
Andrea Riszko willbe providingoperationalsupport forClubmark from the ABA office inSheffield. Hercontact number is0114 223 5639.Clubs in the regionconsidering applying forClubmark should consultthe website then contact Andrea if they wish toproceed, and remember, this isn’t something allclubs will be able to dostraight away, but it will bea very valuable statementfor those clubs that do.
SCOTT BROOKES
The saddest news to hit Yorkshire boxing in recent months wasof the death of promising young pro and former Wombwell & Dearne ABC star Scott Brookes at the age of 20, after a roadaccident. Wombwell coach Eric Walker said that the club wasdevastated by the news. Scott had been at the club from theage of 10, and had won two Junior ABA titles, two silvermedals in the Four Nations Championships, and had captainedthe Young England Team. The death of such a talented youngman is truly tragic, and the thoughts of all in the boxingcommunity are with his family and friends.
