Patchwork Silk Clutch Handbag

Supplies:
• ½ yard light brown silk dupioni
o Cut - One 2½” x 21” (checkerboard)
o One 9½” x 9½” x 13” triangle (flap lining)
o Two 12” x 13½” (bag body & lining)

• Gold silk dupioni – 2½” x 21” strip (checkerboard)

• Low loft cotton batting
o Cut – One 9½” x 9½” x 13” triangle
o One 12” x 13½”
• 12-wt. cotton thread (cream color)
• 4 cones all-purpose thread (light brown to match silk)
• 6 beads (optional)

Directions: (Project for SINGER 14T967 overlock machine )

1. CLUTCH FLAP – Checkerboard - Set the serger for a 2-thread flatlock wide, placing
the 12-wt. cotton in the needle and the all-purpose thread in the lower looper.

2. Place the 2½” light brown and gold silk dupioni strips together. Serge along one
long edge. Pull the strips so that the seam lies flat. The side with the ladders is the
right side.

3. Using a rotary cutter and ruler, cut the serged strips into 2½” sections.

4. Place the right sides of two serged sections together, rotating the blocks so that the
light brown and the gold blocks are opposite of each other. Serge along one edge. Pull
the seam flat.

Repeat with the remaining serged sections, to create a total of four 4-block sections.
5. Place the right sides of two of the 4- block sections together, positioning the
blocks so that the light brown and the gold blocks are opposite of each other. Serge
along one edge. Pull the seam flat.
Repeat with the remaining two 4-block sections.
6. Using this same technique, serge the two 8-block sections together.
7. Cut the checkerboard in half diagonally.
8. Place the triangle batting on a flat surface. Place the triangle flap lining on top of
the batting. Place one of the triangle checkerboard pieces on top of the lining, right
side facing down. Pin.
9. Using a four-thread overlock stitch or a standard sewing machine and a straight
stitch. Sew the triangles together along the 9½” sides, sewing a ¼” seam, leaving
the 13” edge open for turning. Turn right side out.
10. CLUTCH BODY – Set the serger for a two-thread coverhem narrow. Insert the
quilting guide into the slot on the shank of the presser foot. Adjust it so that it is 1½”
from the needles
11. Quilting - Place one of the 12” x 13½” silk pieces on top of the 12” x 13½” batting. Line
up one edge of the silk/batting piece with the guide, having the silk side up. Serge down the
fabric.
12. Move the seam over so that it is even with the guide, then serge down the fabric. Continue
to quilt the fabric in this manner until the entire fabric has even rows of stitching. Repeat to
create even rows of stitching across going the other direction.
13. CONSTRUCTION – Note: Use a four-thread overlock stitch or a standard straight stitch to
construct the bag. The seams should be about ¼”.
14. Place the unfinished edge of the flap to one of the 12” sides of the clutch body, right sides
together. Stitch. Press the seam towards the body.
15. Place the remaining 12” x 13½” silk (the lining) piece to the other end of the clutch body,
right sides together. Stitch the seam.
16. Fold the clutch body in half, right sides together. Pin the side seams, then stitch.
17. Press under ¼” on the free end of the lining. Fold the lining piece in half, right sides
together.
Note: The folded edge should meet the seam of the flap and body.
Pin the side seams. Stitch the side seams of the lining.
18. Turn the clutch body right side out. Insert the lining into the bag.
19. Slipstitch the folded edge of the lining to the seam of the flap and the body.
20. Sew beads in place if desired.
