Patchwork Silk Clutch Handbag


Supplies:
• ½ yard light brown silk dupioni
o Cut - One 2½” x 21” (checkerboard)
o One 9½” x 9½” x 13” triangle (flap lining)
o Two 12” x 13½” (bag body & lining)

• Gold silk dupioni – 2½” x 21” strip (checkerboard)


• Low loft cotton batting
o Cut – One 9½” x 9½” x 13” triangle
o One 12” x 13½”
• 12-wt. cotton thread (cream color)
• 4 cones all-purpose thread (light brown to match silk)
• 6 beads (optional)

Directions: (Project for SINGER 14T967 overlock machine )

1. CLUTCH FLAP – Checkerboard - Set the serger for a 2-thread flatlock wide, placing
the 12-wt. cotton in the needle and the all-purpose thread in the lower looper.

2. Place the 2½” light brown and gold silk dupioni strips together. Serge along one
long edge. Pull the strips so that the seam lies flat. The side with the ladders is the
right side.

3. Using a rotary cutter and ruler, cut the serged strips into 2½” sections.

4. Place the right sides of two serged sections together, rotating the blocks so that the
light brown and the gold blocks are opposite of each other. Serge along one edge. Pull
the seam flat.

Repeat with the remaining serged sections, to create a total of four 4-block sections.
5. Place the right sides of two of the 4- block sections together, positioning the 11. Quilting - Place one of the 12” x 13½” silk pieces on top of the 12” x 13½” batting. Line

Note: The folded edge should meet the seam of the flap and body.

7. Cut the checkerboard in half diagonally. Pin the side seams. Stitch the side seams of the lining.
