Progress Test 1

1. A gaseous compound P (MW = 100) dissociates into Q (MW = 25) and R (MW = 75).
At 373 K, a sample of P was introduced into a ½-litre vessel at 1.2 atm before
dissociation. At equilibrium after dissociation, the degree of dissociation of P was
found to be 1/3.

Assume gas molar volume = 22.4 L at STP in all your calculations.

(a) Calculate the percent (v/v) composition of the equilibrium mixture.

(b) Calculate the equilibrium total pressure (PT), and hence the partial pressures
of P, Q and R using the results from (a).

(c) What is the gas density of undissociated P at 373 K and 1.2 atm?

(d) What is the gas density of the equilibrium mixture under the same conditions
of temperature and pressure in (c).

(e) If the equilibrium total pressure found in (b) is now increased to twice its
value, what is the degree of dissociation of P?

Answers
1(a)
% (v/V) Q = % (v/V) R = 25%
% (v/V) P = 50%.

1(b)
PT = 1.6 atm
Partial pressure of P = PP = % (v/V) x PT = 1.6 atm x 50% = 0.8 atm
Likewise, using similar calculations, PQ = PR = 1.6 atm x 25% = 0.4 atm

1(c)
At 373 K and P = 1.2 atm, gas density of P = 3.9210 g L-1

1(d)
ρ' = gas density of equilibrium mixture under same conditions of temperature and
pressure as those of undissociated P (i.e.373 K and 1.2 atm).

ρ’ = 2.9408 g L-1

1(e)
Degree of dissociation at 373 K and 3.2 atm = 0.2426 = 24.26 %
