A YOUNG FBI AGENT IS ASSIGNED WATCHDOGDUTY OVER A FELLOW AGENT, BUT FINDS HERSELFDRAWN INTO HIS INVESTIGATIONS OFPARANORMAL AND UNEXPLAINED PHENOMENA.
Special Agent Dana Scully, a medical doctor andinstructor at the FBI Academy in Virginia, receivesinstructions to report to Chief Scott Blevins inWashington. Blevins assigns Scully to investigate –and debunk – an unassigned project dubbed “The X−Files,” a burial ground for mysterious, unsolved FBIcases linked to the paranormal.Scully is instructed to contact Fox Mulder, anagent who has become obsessed with investigatingthe otherwise forgotten X−File cases. Mulderdisplays a particular interest in a series of mysterious deaths scattered across the United Stateslinked by one common clue: two strange red markson the victims’ skin.Mulder and Scully fly to Bellefleur, Oregon, toinvestigate the death of Karen Swenson, a highschool student who died mysteriously, and whosecorpse is marked with two red welts. The agentsexhume the body Ray Soames, one of Karen’sclassmates. When Soames’ casket is opened,however, a strange humanoid carcass is discoveredinside. The corpse turns out to be that of anorangutan, and X−rays reveal an unidentified metalobject implanted in the creature’s nasal cavity.Mulder and Scully question Billy Miles andPeggy O’Dell, classmates of Swenson and Soameswho were injured in an automobile accident andhave since been institutionalized. Miles has beenreduced to a near vegetable state, while O’Dell hasbeen confined to a wheelchair. O’Dell suddenlybecomes violent, and in the struggle to subdue her,two red marks are discovered on her skin.While searching the field where Karen Swensonmet her fate, the agents are confronted by adetective who orders them off the premises. Thepair comply, but as they drive along the highway,they are blinded by a strange light from the sky. Thelight drains the energy from their car, bringing it toa halt. Mulder looks at his watch and realizes nineminutes cannot be accounted for.The pair return to their motel where Mulder tellsScully that his interest in the X−Files stems from hischildhood when his sister, who was then eight yearsold, was abducted from their bedroom while heslept. Mulder says that he could not recall any of the incidents until placed under hypnosis years later.An anonymous phone call tips the agents thatPeggy O’Dell was killed as she ran along thehighway. While investigating the incident, the agentsare informed that the autopsy bay was vandalized.They return to the hotel to find their rooms havebeen set ablaze, destroying all evidence gathered inthe case.The agents are confronted by Theresa Nemman,daughter of the coroner who originally performedthe autopsies on the victims. She admits she toobears the red marks on her skin, and describes howa bright light appeared in the sky the evening shewas hanging out with her friends Billy Miles andPeggy O’Dell.Mulder hypothesizes that Billy Miles is under thecontrol of an alien force. He adds his belief thatBilly killed Peggy O’Dell.The agents return to the forest hoping to gathermore evidence. Detective Miles attempts to stopthem, and both he and Mulder witness Billy carryingTheresa to the spot in the woods where the otherbodies had been found. A mysterious lightilluminates Billy, and a strong wind swirls aroundhim. Moments later the light fades and the windsdie, and Billy stands over Theresa not knowingwhere he is or how he got there. The welts havingvanished from his skin.After returning to Washington, Scully gives herreport. Much to the surprise of her supervisors, themetal object removed from the corpse was notdestroyed with all of the other evidence. Scully keptit on her person and turns it into them as the singleremaining piece of physical evidence of what hadtranspired. The metal object is taken by TheCigarette−Smoking Man and filed away alongsideseveral others inside a massive governmentwarehouse in the basement of the Pentagon.
