Born May 16, 1937 in Columbus, Indiana, the son of Mary (Fivecoat) and Charles Hubert Perry.
He attended Columbus High School. He excelled in basketball and accepted an athletic scholarship to Utah State University. He quickly became one of the best basketball players in the country while at Utah State. Given the nickname "Max the Magician" by the local media, he led Utah State to many successful seasons. He is one of the top scorers in Aggie basketball history and at one time held the single game scoring record with 45 points. In 1960 he was voted to the Helms Foundation All American Team and on Feb. 8, 2008, he was inducted into the Utah State University Hall of Fame. After college, he played professional basketball for the Hawaii Chiefs, now the Utah Jazz, but after a severe ankle injury he retired from professional play and moved back to Indiana where he was a high school basketball coach and teacher. He directed programs at New Point, Brown County, Peru, Whiteland and Southwestern. During his coaching career he was voted regional and conference coach of the year several times.
