City Hall to One Bangsar: Go ahead, sue us!
The latter threatens legal action over action by authorities

KUALA LUMPUR: Take us to court if you chose to.

Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Datuk Raja Zainal Abidin yesterday said this in response to operators of the One Bangsar outlets that they may consider legal action over City Hall's move to order them to cease operations by Sept 16.

He backed City Hall in not extending the commercial lease at
the One Bangsar location.

Raja Nong Chik said City Hall made the decision to shut down One Bangsar after listening to residents' grouses and also based on the fact that the business operators were allowed to only function during a five-year lease period.

“City Hall always takes into account the people's plight and
listen to residents complaints,” he said.

“I understand City Hall has the documents on the One Bangsar lease details. It has also been lenient in giving the business owners ample notice of six months to close down and seek alternatives.”

He said the business activities along Jalan Ara, Bangsar,
should not continue as the lease had expired last December.

“The One Bangsar business owners have the right to proceed with legal steps. Anyhow, we have to respect the court process and we just wait for the outcome.”

KL Mayor Datuk Ahmad Fuad Ismail could not be contacted for comment as he is on an overseas working trip.
Meanwhile, Bangsar's residents' associations (RAs) are taking a wait-and-see approach to plans by One Bangsar Sdn
Bhd and its nine tenant restaurants to challenge the City Hall'sdecision.
"One Bangsar Sdn Bhd has all the rights to pursue the matter in court. At the end of the day, it is up to the court to
decide," said Bangsar Baru Residents' Association secretary Prem Kumar Nair.
While the One Bangsar business operators adamantly want to stay put, residents feel that they could do without these
outlets.
Prem also feels that since City Hall has given the business operators a lease for five years, it is only the right thing to
do for them to leave when it ends.
"Keeping residents' best interests at heart, we hope City Hall's decision not to extend their lease will remain."
Lucky Garden Residents' Association president, Ahmad Nordeen Mohd Salleh, said it is up to the business owners in
One Bangsar to take the matter to court.
"If they wish to go to court, let it be. We cannot stop them."
A copy of the notification letter he received from the City Hall stated that the business owners have to vacate the
complex by Sept 16 this year and decision should be respected.
"Let's see what the court has to say about this. Only then we could decide on the next step."
He also noted that no one from One Bangsar has so far approached residents to have a dialogue, following a report
that the business operators wished to meet with City Hall and Bangsar's RAs to work out a compromise.
One Bangsar Sdn Bhd and its nine tenant restaurants aim to challenge City Hall's refusal to extend their licences
following the expiry of their lease.

On March 19, The Malay Mail had front-paged Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Fuad Ismail's intention to
close down One Bangsar after hearing the plight of nearby Bangsar Baru residents.
He had said City Hall would be giving the business operators six months to move out, after which, the area will return
to become fully residential once again.
Ahmad Fuad had also said City Hall won't allow any more commercial activities to take place after the business
operators move out.

Rileks lah nstman, I'm also a Bangsar resident and I am 1 million percent against business in residential areas. Bangsar One say they're going to court, so let the court decide lah. By the way, no matter what my vote is not for Pakatan. Got it?

City Hall is playing god. City Hall think they can ride roughshod over the business community. How can we attract investors if City Hall behave like thugs. Why should the business community give in to residents who think they own Bangsar?. By the way I am a Bangsar resident and I am 1 million per cent behind the business community. By the way, Raja Nong Chik, if you think you can win a few votes by playing to the residents' gallery, think again. Because no matter what you do my vote is for Pakatan. Got it?

I'll let Mr Spock, the Vulcan from the famed Star Trek series present his view; "The needs of the many
outweigh the needs of the few" City Hall and the FT Ministry should listen to the demands and needs of the
majority of the people concerned. Afterall, isn't that what democracy is all about?
