15. In the figure above, O is the center of the circle, AB = 6, and CD =10. What is the sum of
the areas of the shaded regions?

Draw a few small triangles. Draw line from midpoint AB to O.

AB=6, so A to midpoint AB is 3.

CD=10, so CO=5 (radius), so AO=5 (radius)

Therefore midpoint AB to O is 4 (3-4-5 special right triangle)

Thus the area of the trapezoid is

b b   AB  CD   6  10 
A trapezoid   1 2  h   h    4  32
 2   2   2 

Alternatively, the trapezoid is comprised of 3 triangles:

AOC , BOD , and AOB , all with height 4.

The combined trapezoid area = (5)(4)  (5)(4)  (6)(4) = 10 + 10 + 12 = 32

The area of the trapezoid needs to be subtracted from the area of the semicircle

A semicircle   r 2    5  

Therefore, the shaded area is

25
A semicircle  A trapezoid   32

25  64
