Spend a few days in harmony with the canyon and its community, complete with the freedom to do as|ittle as youwish. os HISTORY Locatedin southern Peru, approximately 100 miles (a60km) northwest of Arequipa, the Colea Canyon is one of the deepest canyons in the world at 10,725 ft (3,269 m) ~ more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the United States. The Colca Valley is a colourful Andean valley formerly inhabited by the Collaguas and the Cabanas. Local people still maintain ancestral traditions and continue to cultivate the pre~ Inca stepped terraces. The Spanish laid out towns along the canyon and built churches here but the towns did not thrive and many have disappeared. In the 1980s the Majes Hydroelectric Project constructed roads that opened the area up to outsiders. Para) TRAVEL TIPS Weather ‘The weather is dry with temperatures between 17 and 20°C. Early in the morning it is quite cold, but it starts warming up at noon. At night the temperature might be cool if the sky is clear orcold fit is cloudy.
