The Colca Valley is a colourful Andean valley formerly inhabited by the Collaguas and the Cabanas. Local people still maintain ancestral traditions and continue to cultivate the pre~ Inca stepped terraces. The Spanish laid out towns along the canyon and built churches here but the towns did not thrive and many have disappeared. In the 1980s the Majes Hydroelectric Project constructed roads that opened the area up to outsiders.
