A nuclear power plant operates basicallythe same way as a fossil fuel plant, withone difference:
the source of heat

The process that produces the heat in anuclear plant is the fissioning or splittingof uranium atoms. That heat boils water to make the steam that turns the turbine-generator, just as in a fossil fuel plant.

The part of the plant where the heat isproduced is called the
reactor core

As of July 2008, there were more than 430operating nuclear power plants in 31countries and, together, they providedabout 15 percent of the world's electricity.Of these, some depend more on nuclear power than others. For instance, inFrance about 77 percent of the country'selectricity comes from nuclear power.
