PHOTOCOPIABLE Surviving on a desert island
Many of us occasionally think about living on a desert island, but few ever have the chance to experience it. In the TV series‘Survivor’, sixteen people do just that. For forty days they livetogether and compete against each other on a tropical island, and at the end of the contest the winner receives one million pounds. This is an extract from the diary of one of thecontestants, Mike Foster.
‘When you think about living away from home, you imaginebeing in another city or even another country, but travellinghalfway round the world to a desert island in the Seychelles isnot something you consider. But now that I’m here, I must saythat I absolutely love it. The scenery is extremely beautiful –there are moments when you feel like staying here forever.‘Having said that, there are real difficulties. We all miss peopleback home – we’re so far away from everything here – and wehave disagreements and arguments. I’m finding it hard to livewithout simple things, like soap and shampoo and a comfortablebed, and we’re having some problems finding food, too.Catching fish is quite hard, especially when the sea is rough. We’re getting a bit better at fishing but I have dreams abouteating hamburgers or chocolate biscuits!‘One thing that’s obvious is that we’re all losing weight.Everybody is looking fit and healthy. People won’t recognize uswhen we get back to civilization!’

PHOTOCOPIABLE Job hunting on the Internet
A recent survey asked students in their last year of school oruniversity how they were looking for their first job. Theiranswers were many and varied. However, those who were usedto the Internet were having more success than those who wereemploying more traditional methods, such as looking upadvertisements in the newspaper. The possibilities on the net seem almost endless. By simplytyping the word
 jobs
into a search engine, we got a list of nearlythirty million websites coming up on the screen. With so manyto choose from, it would be impossible to find anything suitable,so the next step is to look for something more specific. Youhave to limit your search to the area you want to work in.As an example, we chose law. Limiting the search meant that‘only’ 196,000 websites appeared, and the search had taken just0.46 seconds. The first website on the list was advertising 339different jobs. As you can see, there were plenty of options.Obviously, a lot of the available jobs are not open to school oruniversity leavers – they call for higher qualifications or moreexperience. On top of this, there are factors that you mustconsider yourself, such as where you want to work and whatsalary you are prepared to accept. But there are lots of jobs outthere, and it’s certainly a good idea to look at the possibilities onthe Internet when you’re searching for work.
