listwasahorrid,tortuous,week-longaffairforbothofus.Wetriedphonics,wetriedbreakingdownthewordsintosyllables,etc.,etc.Wetriedtonotespecialtriggersinthewords.Ifweworkedreallyhard,afteraweekof repetitionandreminders,we’dgetthemrightintimeforthespellingtest.Yesterdayevening,wesatdownforabout20-25minutesandusingtheDavisspell-readingmethod,finishedthefollowinglist:

ItisalwaysrewardingtocompleteaDavisProgramwithaclient,buttherearethosewhostandoutasespeciallysatisfyingandenjoyable.MyexperiencewithJacobDozierwasjustoneof thosecases.WhenJacob’sparentsbroughthimforanassessment,hehadnotbeenformallydiagnosed.Theirsensitiveandcreative8-year-oldhadmanysymptomsofdyslexiaandADHD,andwasexhibitingahighleveloffrustrationanddecliningself-confidenceinthesecondgrade.Brandt,Jacob’sfather,recalledexperiencingsimilartraitsanddifficultiesduringhisownschoolyears.thereadingexercisesbutheacceptedthemquicklyonceherealizedtherewasnopressure.Soonhenoticedhowmuchhewasimproving:heprogressedfromearlyfirstgradelevelreadingwithmultiplemistakestolate2ndgradelevelwithfewmistakesandexcellentcomprehension.JacobisparticularlygoodatSymbolMastery,andheespeciallyenjoysworkingwithhisfamily.Heisquicklyclimbingtheladdertosuccess.Hispositiveattitudeandeagernesstotakechargeofhisownsituationareattributesthatwillservehimwellinschoolandout,fromnowon.CongratulationsonaGREAT program,Jacob!

Jacobwasveryeagerforasolutiontohisdifficultieswithreading.Hisparentsalsohopedhewouldcometoenjoyreading,aswellasgainself-confidenceandsomecontroloverhisbehaviorwhenfrustrated.Jacob’sreadingassessmentshowedhugedisorientationswithtriggerwords,wordrecognitionand pronunciationatanearlyfirstgradelevel.Healsoaddedan“ah”soundtotheendsofmostcontentwords.Jacobwasacandidatefor Alignment,andfromthemomentherealizedhewasincontrolofhis“hands,”heseemedtoblossomrightbeforemyeyes.Readingfordisorientationgavehimimmediateconfidence.Hedelightedinexclaiming“Hands jumped!”andquicklymastered bringingthemback.Notonlydidhemakefewermistakesthanduringhisassessment,butthat“ah”soundwas

muchlessprevalent.Hetookseriouslyhisassignmenttotrydifferentactivitieswithandwithouthis“hands,”andreturnedondaytwowithafullreport,including“FoodtastesbetterwithmyAlignment!”JacobhadarealfeelforhisDialandenjoyedexperiencingeachofthelevelsbeforeinstallingit.Althoughhetookawhiletomastertheuppercasealphabetwithoutlooking,heusedreleaseanddialsoexpertlythathehardlyseemedfrustrated.Hereadilynoticedhisowndisorientations,andreachedfortheletterthatcausedit,leavingmedelightedlyspeechless!Weestablishedapatternof release,dial,hands,andbalancebefore playingKoosheachtime,whicheasilytranslatedtorelease,dial,andhandswhenwereturnedtoourwork.IputJacobinchargeofremindingmewheneverwestartedanewactivity.Hedelightedintakingthisresponsibility,announcinghisdialsettingrightaway.AtfirstJacobwasreluctanttodo
