Complete qualification of high-speed fiber optic networks
 JDSU Fiber Characterization Service
About JDSU Fiber Characterization Service2
JDSU’s Fiber Characterization Service verifies the integrity and capacity ofyourfiber plant through the measurement ofkey fundamental properties, such asattenuation, reflectance, and dispersion.Comprehensive testing, using JDSU'sindustry-leading optical test equipment,is performed by expert technicalengineers and administered by a dedicated project manager.Whether you areincreasing the speed or density oftraffic on your existing network or you wish toverify the quality ofa fiber installation prior to deployment, the informationprovided in our comprehensive report will allow you to properly plan for currentand future network deployments.Fiber characterization quantifies your fiber plant's ability to handle high data rateand Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) applications with a wide array of measurements and services, including OIL,ORL,OTDR traces,CD,and PMD.Analysis ofthe results eliminates costly troubleshooting and finger pointingduring the latter stages ofnetwork installation.
Fiber characterization is required toensure that poor ORL,CD,and PMD results do not impair or prevent certain typesoftraffic, such as 10G and DWDM.
The test results provide baseline fiber charac-teristics,enabling improved network planning, increased network reliability, reduced service interruptions, and more effective future maintenance. We bring our own specially trained experts to your site to help qualify your opticalnetwork.Dedicated project managers work with you to develop the solution, managing all phases ofthe project and ensuring customer satisfaction.Experienced and certified test technicians and test engineers perform testing on your network and on your schedule to ensure accurate results.A senior testengineer provides a comprehensive final report with detailed test results, analysis, and recommendations.JDSU continuously strives towards the gold standard, providing a completepackage offiber characterization equipment, services, and certifications.TrustJDSU to prepare you for FTTH,triple-play applications, and high data rates withour Fiber Characterization Service provided by our own experienced staff.
Fiber Characterization3
Optical Insertion Loss (OIL)
OIL measurements provide optical power loss results at various wavelengths aswell as transmission delay and fiber length.OIL measurement results can indicateexcessive loss, which may require the addition ofoptical amplifiers orregenerators.
Optical Return Loss (ORL)
ORL measurements indicate the cumulative reflection offered by the optical linkas a result ofconnector reflectance and inherent fiber reflectance.Thismeasurement provides a pass/fail result for the entire link and determines thesuitability ofa link for WDM (Wave Division Multiplexing) applications.FailedORL results can usually be corrected by careful cleaning ofthe fiber connectors orby re-termination ofthe fiber connectors in worst-case scenarios.
Optical Time Domain Reflectometry (OTDR)
An OTDR trace provides an overall view ofthe fiber span. This trace allowstechnicians to evaluate the performance ofsplices, connectors, and the overallfiber link.OTDR traces allow the technician to identify high-loss splices andconnectors,ORL information on individual reflective events from connectors andmechanical splices, and bending.
