The Iggy the Iguana Character Development Workshop is designed to teachstudents how to think outside the box and create unique characters withinteresting stories. The author, Melissa Williams, will discuss the way she usedher own experiences with her pets to create the fictional characters in
Iggy theIguana
. Students will learn how to bring their own ideas to life through words andillustrations as professional illustrator, Ryan Shaw, explains the process of connecting to the author’s characters with art. During the week, the students willhave the opportunity to use their newly learned skills to come up with their owncharacter and develop a unique short story that will be eligible for publication inthe “I Write Short Stories by Kids for Kids” Contest

MEET THE INSTRUCTORS!
Information about the Author:
Melissa M. Williams, Children’s Author and Public Speaker, has been writingstories since she was eight years old. Melissa’s
Iggy the Iguana
chapter bookseries was inspired by her own real life experiences with childhood pets whilegrowing up in Houston, Texas. While pursuing her Master’s degree inProfessional Counseling, Melissa began substitute teaching for elementaryschools in order to understand the daily life of her young audience. The studentshelped Melissa create relatable and realistic stories while she included lessons,values and acceptance within the storyline. As the owner of LongTale Publishingand advocate for childhood literacy,Melissa founded the literacy foundation,Read3Zero, giving students the opportunity to be published authors in the “IWrite Stories by Kid for Kids” contest.Melissa spends most of the school year speaking to students about her own journey as an author and the process of creative writing. Melissa has presented her lessons to over 100 schools with inthe Texas, California, and Michigan regions.Inspiring students to read and writeis the main goal as she promotes literacy through her creative writing contestsand activities. Melissa has been given the privilege of being a state judge in theannual Texas PTA Reflections Literature contest and has spoken at literacyevents, girl-scout functions, and charities in efforts to encourage children tofollow their dreams.
The young brain is a naturally creative brain, so we must learn to take advantage of that gift and continue to develop it into our later years.

Information about the Illustrator:
Ryan Shaw specializes in eye-catching cartoon art and illustrations. Ryan workshand in hand with authors and business owners creating children's book andcoloring book illustrations, greeting card designs, logo designs, and mascotsdesigns. LongTale Publishing is excited to add Ryan to our creative team as the
 Iggy the Iguana
cartoonist and coloring book illustrator. Ryan has three booksthat he has illustrated for 4RV Publishing:

, all released in 2009. Ryan is also the winner of the5th Annual ABC Children's Picture Book Competition! His soon to be releasedbook,
