Market StillTough, But Jobs Available

 Justafewshortyearsago,collegegraduatesfinishedtheirstudiesandenteredajobmarketprimeforlandingajob.Between2008and2009,however,thejobmarketbegantostallandthenshrink,leavinggraduateswithbleakemploymentprospects.Recentforecastscontinuetopaintaless-than-idealemploymentlandscapefortheclassof2010.AccordingtotheJobOutlook2010reportbytheNationalAssociationofCollegesandEmployers(NACE),employersplantohireabout7percentfewernewgraduatesduring2009-10thantheydidin2008-09.Despitethesedisappointingfigures,soon-to-begraduatescannothangtheirheadsindespair.Jobs,whileperhapshardertolandquickly,arestillavailable.Nowmorethaneveristhetimetobewellpreparedandremainpersistent.
MajorsinDemand
Whileoverallhiringprojectionsaredown,severalmajorsarestillindemand.Financemajorsappearatthetopofthelistofdegreesindemandfor2010,followedbyengineeringandtechnicalmajors.AccordingtoNACEsJobOutlook2010,48.3percentofemployersintheFinancesectorplantohirerecentgraduates.FinishingsecondandthirdonthelistrespectivelyareAccountingwhere46.3percentofemployersplantohireandMechanicalEngineeringat44.8percent.OtherhighlysoughtafterundergraduatemajorsincludeBusinessAdministration/Management,ComputerScience,InformationSciences&Systems,Marketing/MarketingManagement,andManagementInformationSystems.
InternshipHiringExpectedtoIncrease
Whilethenumberofjobsofferedtorecentgraduatesmaybedown,onebrightspotisevident.NACEreportsthatin2010,employersexpecttoincreasetheirinternshipandco-ophiringby5.8%—somethingtokeepinmindduringyourjobsearch.Notonlydoemployersprefercandidateswithexperience,theyprefercandidateswith
relevant 
workexperience,thekindgainedthroughinternshipsandco-ops.Theopportunitymayevenleadtoafull-timepositionatthefulfillmentoftheinternship.AsMarilynMackes,NACEexecutivedirectorconfirms,“Itsnotsurprisingthatemployerslookfirsttotheirinterns—whohaveatrackrecordwiththecompany—whentheyhavejobstofill”.Duringyourjobsearch,don’tdiscounttheprospectoftakinganinternship.Itjustmightlandyouafull-timeposition.

Notonlyisthisthebestwaytomeetpeopleoncampus,itisalsoanexcellentwaytobuildyourresume.Noexcuses,transferstudents,thisincludesyoutoo!Thinkaboutit,ifyouwereinahiringpositionandhadyourchoicebetweentwostudentswiththesamemajorandGPAwhichwouldyouchoose:thestudentwhoappearstogotoclassandthenstraighthome,orthestudentwhoisinvolvedinstudentorganizations,committees,andleadershiproles?Studentinvolvementshowsthatyoutakeinitiativeandworkwellwithgroups.Gettinginvolvedissimple;checkoutDemonDirecttofindaclubthatfitsyourmajororinterests.
2.Itsnevertooearly(ortoolate)tostart.
Perhapsthebiggestsourceofstressonseniorsisthefearofnotbeingabletolandajobaftercollege.Despitethebelief thatnobodyishiring,jobsareavailable.Atthesametime,today’sjobmarketisincrediblycompetitive.Youneedtotakestepsearlyinyouracademiccareertoensuresuccessinthejobmarketupongraduation.Planningandpreparationareamust.Talktofacultyandcareeradvisorstolearneverythingyoucanaboutyourmajorandwhatcareerpathsitcanleadto.Participateinmultipleinternships,astheyallowyoutogainhands-onexperienceinyourfieldofstudysomethingemployerslookforamongcandidates.
3.Buildyourprofessionalnetwork.
Networkingisaboutbuildingandmaintainingrelationshipsthataremutuallybeneficial,andsharingknowledge,experiencesandadvicewithothersinyourcareerfield.Forinstance,ifyouareanaccountingmajor,itmakessensetoconnectwithotheraccountingstudents,professors,andprofessionalsintheaccountingindustry.Theycanansweryourquestionsaboutthatfieldofworkandyouhavetheopportunitytoofferyourinsightaswell.NetworkingisNOTaboutaskingforajob,althoughitcouldeventuallyleadtoone.YoumaynotevenrealizethatyouarenetworkingonadailybasisbyusingsocialmediasitessuchasFacebookorTwitter,orprofessionalsiteslikeLinkedIn.Havequestionsaboutnetworking?SignupforanetworkingskillsworkshopofferedthroughtheCareerCenter.
