Have you ever felt excluded or not included?
At one time or another, most of us have experi-
enced such a feeling. We know what it’s like to
be passed over, skipped over or left out.

disciples that the resurrection is for them. But
don’t forget Peter. Make sure he knows it is for
him, too.” I can only imagine how wonderful the
angel’s words sounded to Peter’s ears.
If there is a disciple that most people seem to
relate to it seems to be Peter. He’s so human.
Maybe you’re feeling a little like Peter as you read
this article. If so, take note: Easter includes you.
The message of grace is for you. Like Peter,
we all need:
„ The grace of forgiveness…
„ The grace to begin again…
„ The grace to entrust our lives to God…
„ The grace to live for God and His Kingdom…
The message of eternal life is also for you.
Easter’s great declaration is that death has been
overcome. The Apostle Paul writes, “Death has
been swallowed up in victory. Where, O Death
is your sting? Where, O Death is your victory.
The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is
the law. But thanks be to God who gives us the
victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Cor.

On Good Friday evening at 7 pm in the
Sanctuary, the choir will lead us through the

the old hymn states, “Victory in Jesus.”
I will always consider Phil Baker as my
pastor. Phil has been present with me throughout
my faith journey, as well as my ministry. He was
my pastor when I became a Christian. He
baptized my wife, Lisa. He officiated our
wedding. He was my mentor pastor through
candidacy. He baptized Nicholas and Lucas. He
officiated my mother’s funeral. Phil and his
wife, Sammye, have been with my family for
many years. On Saturday (March 20), Phil died.
As I write this article I am sad. I cannot
communicate how important Phil has been to me.
He was my friend and my mentor.
I’m sad, too, for Sammye and her family.
They are grieving the loss of their loved one. Yet
through tears she expresses Resurrection Faith.
She knows that death was not the end for Phil.
He is alive forevermore and she knows it! Easter
is for Sammye.
And Easter is for you. Thank you for sharing
the journey with me at Tyler Street.

Then at 8:30 or 10:50 am, come celebrate anew
the joyous resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ!

choirs, corporate hymns of celebration, and a
message of Resurrection. Christ is risen! He is
risen indeed!

group will be reading from Waking the Dead
“The glory of the heart fully alive,” by John

Where does the money go?
Understanding Connectional Giving

Last month, I began a series of articles on
some of the ministries our “connectional
giving” (i.e. apportionments plus additional
gifts) help fund. We began by looking at
UMCOR, the United Methodist Committee
on Relief. This month, we are looking at
Africa University.
Africa University is located just outside
Mutare, Zimbabwe. It came into existence
because of a vision crafted and voted into
existence at the 1988 General Conference of
the United Methodist Church as a way for
our denomination to offer practical help for
Africa through education and to provide a
suitable place to train native pastors to reach
Africa with the Gospel.
Africa University opened its doors in
1992. What began then with only 40

hundreds of orphan children in Haiti,
who were sleeping in the mud and on
cardboard boxes. I had hoped to supply

This month, seniors at Tyler Street
Christian Academy began the Financial
Peace unit in their Economics classes, under
the instruction of Dr. Karen Egger. The
curriculum, entitled Foundations in Personal
Finance, was specifically created for high
school students. It covers personal finance
through an age-appropriate video series
taught by Dave Ramsey and includes student
workbooks and other resources for instruc-
tors. TSCA administration chose to add this
curriculum to the standard economics
curriculum because it gives our students a
solid Biblical basis for planning their
financial futures.

wife Carole, and I went to Abilene to pick up
the tents. They were delivered to Buckner
Missions Home in Mesquite, on Wednesday
March 10. They will be sent to Haiti on
Wednesday, March 24.

Graduates of Africa University have gone on
to serve as clergy and lay-leaders in churches
across the continent. There is no doubt that
Africa University is part of the story of
evangelism and revival in Africa today.
In this past year, the North Texas Annual
Conference partnered with other conferences
and organizations to build the Bishop Alfred
L. Norris Medical Clinic which offers
medical care for the campus and surrounding
community and gives students in the medical
science programs hands-on training.

ANNIVERSARY The class was opened
with the singing of hymn “Let Us Break
Bread Together” on Sunday, March 7.
Opening prayer was brought by Buddy
Holley. We sang happy birthday to Jean
Helsem whose birthday is on Thursday,
March 11th. Sorry to report that Mozell
Skinner has been sick all week. Barbara
Bolin reminded everyone that our party is

3:00 p.m. at Patrizio’s in Cedar Hill. Mary
Schoonover gave our devotion for this
morning titled “Grace.” She shared with us
that we all receive unearned and undeserved
grace from God. Estelle’s lesson was
entitled “Our Helper.” Her main scripture
was John 14 and she reminded us that we
are all given a spiritual gift. Thanks to the
Holleys for the great refreshments. We were
glad to have our visitor, Ann Theriot,
daughter of Alma and Dub Sutton. On
Sunday, March 14th, the class was opened
with the singing of “Onward Christian
Soldiers” led by Nina Wakefield and
accompanied by Jean Helsem. The opening
prayer was given by Chastine Wieting. The
class sang Happy Birthday to Barbara Bolin
whose birthday is Thursday, March 18th.
Mozell Skinner is still ill but doing better.
Estelle Holley was also out ill. Hope our ill
will soon be well and back with us. Patsy
Thompson announced that they will be
adding their 12th great-grandchild to their
family this year. Our devotion was brought
by J King. His scripture was from Matthew
25 that reminded us to take heart to feed,
nurture, develop and guide the children and
youth of today. J has been a member of this
church all his life and he wanted to thank all
the members of the Anniversary Class,
Wedding Ring Class, Couples Class and all
the other classes who have continued to be
leaders of the young people today as in the
past. Richard Phillips’ lesson was a
continuation of Joel Osteen’s book. He
reminded us to get rid of bad habits, change
our behavior, and establish new routines.
The Bible teaches us to make the most of
your time and change for the better. We
were glad to have as a visitor, Ann, the
daughter of Alma and Dub Sutton, with us
again. Thanks to Chastine for the good
refreshments. Don Helsem brought the
opening prayer on March 21. Carla Boss
brought the devotion on “Humility and
Submission.” Mary Margaret’s lesson was
on “Temptations.” Thanks to Jean and Don
Helsem for bringing the refreshments that

CHALLENGE On March 7, Leon
McWhorter taught a lesson based on I Cor.
13—the three things that will endure: faith,
hope, and love. Leon gave us numerous
scriptures to remind us of the meaning and
application of these three virtues in our lives.
All three are necessary for our daily walk with
God, but love is the greatest. Love is the only
one we can give away. Steve Reed presented a
lesson on March 14 called “Good News/Bad
News” based Romans 1-3. The bad news is
that God’s wrath is on the unrighteous. We are
all guilty of sin and God will judge us. The
good news is that through faith, God saves and
justifies us. We cannot boast about our lives.
It is all about what God has done for us. On
March 21, Jere Thompson taught us about the
four changes that occur when we accept Jesus
Christ as our Lord and Savior. First, we are
being born again (John 3:3, and I John 3:9).
Secondly, we find God and know Jesus Christ
who gives us our future and our hope (Acts
17:27-28, Jeremiah 29:11, I John 4:7-8).
Thirdly, we will know the Holy Spirit who
comforts and teaches us and will never leave
us (Romans 8:9-11, John 14:15-17 and 26).
Lastly, we will turn to prayer which will
become a vital part of our lives (Jeremiah
29:12-13, James 5:16, I John 1:9 and I John
5:16). Jere ended the lesson with a prayer of
repentance from Psalm 51:17, 10, 12. Bob
Cunningham led us in prayer.
COVENANT Thank you, Kris, for leading
us on March 21 as we walked through “Living
in Anticipation.” Class discussion was
excellent this morning. Everyone’s contribu-
tions meant a lot. Happy April birthday to
Anthony Skinner.
TWO BY TWO Are Christians really
different? Jere Thompson’s lesson on March 7
asked us that question. Very thought provok-
ing. Thanks, Jere, for a really good lesson. We
learned that we don’t make a practice of
sinning. Our president, Don Lindholm,
reported that people in Haiti are turning to
God in record numbers. Continue to pray for
Haiti and Chili. Their suffering is heart
wrenching. As we reflect on our teachers’
subjects in the Two by Two Class, we are
touched when we see the parallel of Jere
Thompson, Jim Gettman and our pastor, Ed
Lantz’ teachings on the Holy Spirit. There is
such an anointing. They correlate so beauti-
fully. That is the leading of the Holy Spirit. We
are happy to report that Blanche and Will are
now home and they are delighted. It has been a
long ordeal. Dal and Lawana are improving.

In March, we celebrate Lucy’s birthday and
anniversaries for the Rhodes and Lindholms.
In spite of the weather on March 21, we had
a good attendance. Shirley Jackson gave an
excellent devotion, as she always does. We
feel closer to the Lord. Don and Lucy
returned from their trip out west. And Don
gave an anointed lesson. Due to the weather
we had visitors from the Wedding Ring
Class. Jean Hoffmeister and her daughter,
Debbie, received a warm welcome. We were
also blessed to have Freddy Boswell, Mary
Etta Wheeley and R. E. Frederick. Have a
blessed week. And Shirley Jackson re-
minded us to pray because somewhere out
there, someone needs our prayers!
WEDDING RING On March 7th, class
opened with Ed Logan at the piano and we
sang “Oh How I Love Jesus” followed with
“His Name Is Wonderful.” Herby gave a
beautiful prayer. R.E.’s devotion titled
“God’s Will For Us” was most thought
provoking. Evelyn did not give a report on
those who are ill as everyone was there
except Nina. She is going to check on her.
Ace then followed with his lesson continu-
ing with the travels and works of Peter. Still
in the book of Acts, he spoke of how “an
angel of the Lord saved Peter.” Also it was
the first time in the Bible that the word
“Christian” was used. Ace always does such
a fine job. On Mar. 14th, class opened with
Ed Logan at the piano and we sang “There
Is Power In The Blood” followed by “’Tis
So Sweet to Trust in Jesus.” Tom gave our
morning prayer. Myron read a cute reading
about “The Most Powerful Book.” Evelyn
reported on talking to our “absent” mem-
bers. Gertrude said she thought of the class
often, missed us, and said hello to all.
Marcelle said they were doing well but
missed us. Martha Ann and Ed were about
the same -- also missed everyone. The same
went for Mary Lu. Evelyn followed with a
very nice devotion “If it be so, why?” Buddy
Holley was our guest teacher. He reported
that Estelle was ill but she had helped him
in getting his lesson together. It was
outstanding and called “Our Helper.” Yes,
God is our helper. We know God answers
prayers. We just have to believe and ask for
his help. Thank you Buddy. On Mar. 21st,
two brave souls made it to class, R.E. &
Mary Etta. Two guests showed up--Jean
Hoffmeister and her daughter, Debbie, from
Okla. City. The four of them visited with the

CrossWise Players present the world premiere of “Angels Love Donuts”

A CrossWise World Premiere Movie, Angels Love Donuts, opened on
March 20, 2010 at 2 pm at the Historic Texas Theater in Dallas. This
was a “Tyler Street Loves Oak Cliff” event. All ticket proceeds from the
premiere benefitted two Oak Cliff based organizations – the Golden
Oak Scholarships for Oak Cliff High School Students and Wycliffe
Bible Translators. The day was cold and snowy, but the excitement was
high. We had about 260 in attendance. Thanks to all who helped to make
this day a fantastic success!
