Eastvile Primary's IT Centre ‘The Zisukhanyo Schools are situated in Mitchell's Plain. They are: Mitchell Heights, Eastville and Liesbeeck Primary Schools. PEDP sought to integrate IT programmes in these three schools in order to not only teach the children and staff computer literacy, but also to reinforce numeracy and literacy skills as well as HIV/AIDS education and prevention through the use of state of the art IT centres established on each campus. PEDP Chairman, Daniel Gallagher, recognised the need for the holistic development of these school children and asked PSFA to join the Zisukhanyo Project to provide school feeding to 169 children who are not fed by the Department of Education subsidy. We were also grateful to receive funding from PEDP to upgrade Eastville FT Primary's existing organic vegetable garden. The changes evident in these impoverished schools over the two yearsare almost indescribable! Each school boasts a high-tech IT centre furnished with at least 50 ‘computers all with LCD monitors, and each centre is decorated with themed murals. At Eastville Primary, the Big 5 look over the children’s shoulders as they learn to identify proper nouns on interactive software! An e-learning project, in conjunction with the students of Wesley College in Ireland, was also undertaken. ‘The earners at both schools communicated via the internet to complete a project on HIV/AIDS education, Then, to their delight, the learners were able to meet some of their correspondents when they came out to SA on a Rugby Tour last year. Using the Interactive White Board for maths All three schools received an interactive white board classroom, where the children are now using the latest technology to lean. TEACH A HUNGRY ‘The project’s completion wil! be at the end of 2010, when the schools will take total responsibility for the facilities. Mr. Graham Stark, Principal of Eastville Primary, says although itis a daunting prospect, they are ready to accept the challenge. They have found ‘enough money in their budget to retain their IT co-ordinator, and will turn the centre into a low-cost computer learning centre for the community after school in order to maintain the co- ordinator's salary, They are confident too that they will be able to disseminate the skills gamered from PEDP to the larger community, thereby enriching more lives. PSFA is grateful to have been included in such a rewarding venture. It is always appreciated when funders recognise the need to nourish our children's bodies as well as their minds, We look forward to continuing our partnership with the PEDP as they incorporate more schools, making a lasting impact not only in children's lives but also in the future of this country. ‘Anthea, Eastlle's IT Co-ordinator
