The lap band surgery is the least invasive, safest and the only adjustable and reversible surgical weight loss procedure. It helps in achieving sustained weight loss by placing an adjustable band around the upper part of the stomach to reduce its capacity of food intake. In lap band surgery the amount of food that the stomach will hold at any time is restricted by creating a small gastric pouch. During the procedure, the surgeon makes a few small incisions. Using a camera and thin, long-shafted laparoscopic instruments, the surgeon places a round silicone adjustable band around the upper part of the stomach and secures it in place with several sutures creating a small gastric pouch. This inflatable band controls the flow of food from this smaller pouch to the rest of the digestive tract. The patient will have a sensation of fullness with a small amount of food. Also because of the slow emptying, the patient will continue to feel full for several hours reducing the urge to eat between meals.
