Dwyer helping to create Sri Lankan program
Judy Dwyer, associate professor of social work, is spending the first part of 2007 in Sri Lanka helping to develop that country’s first university trainingprogram for social workers.Dwyer is collaborating with faculty at the University of Kelaniya in Colomboin determining what Sri Lankan social workers should be taught, setting up acurriculum and planning courses. Her work is assisted by Rotary International, which awarded her a Rotary Grant for University Teachers.“It’s important to me to do this because we at UW-Superior have become soconnected with Sri Lanka through the large number of students who haveenrolled here and taught us about their homeland,” she said. “They’re active oncampus and contribute to our community. So I think it’s important we giveback to that country for what it has given to us in Superior.”

I
t seems hard to believe, but it has been 10 years since Dr. Michael Waxman joined the Chemistry faculty andfirst led science students in singing “The Mole Song” on Oct. 23, 1997. In this photo of that historic event, severalstudents look on as Waxman, dressed as a stereotypical mad scientist with frizzy wig and wacky bowtie, holds alofthis mole puppet as he exuberantly leads the singing. For the uninitiated, Avogadro's Number — also called “amole” — is a basic measuring unit of chemistry for 6.02 x 1023. Mole Day was created as a nationwide way tofoster interest in chemistry. Fun-loving scientists celebrate “Mole Day” starting at 6:02 a.m. on Oct. 23 (the 10thmonth and 23rd day, get it?)Get the latest news about UW-Superior, alumni and Campaign Superior:
