Liberty Chamber Of CommerceHold Annual Banquet Business &Business Person Of Year Announced

Annual Meeting of the Liberty Chamber of Com-merce onMarch 27 atAVS Ban-quet Centrein Asheboro. The eventopened witha welcomefrom Cham- ber PresidentJustin Gainesof FidelityBank fol-lowed by an invocation by Liberty Mayor Jim Parker.Crisco opened his remarks discussing the state of theeconomy within North Carolina. He said the economyis getting better slowly but steadily. He said the bestanalogy he had heard was that, “we had no light at theend of the tunnel but someone found a 40-watt bulb.”Employment has improved over the last two months. However, Crisco warned not to pin too much on thenumbers just yet. He predicted that as the businessenvironment improves, the unemployment rate willactually increase initially because people will startlooking again. But unemployment will go back downagain as the economy picks up. “3000 people per month are moving into North Carolina so somethingmust be right,” he added. Crisco talked about his work at the NC Department of Commerce and how it is the point group on economic development for the state.“Since I’ve been Secretary of Commerce, I’ve tried todo some things differently. One is to be more inclusive[with other departments]. Another is to be moreglobal,” he said, adding that the state is now sendingchickens to Russia and furniture to Japan, for example. North Carolina is facing more and more competitionfrom other states vying for business growth. Criscoshared the example of the movie industry. At one time, North Carolina was number one for attracting moviestudios and television shows. Now, with greater com- petition from Georgia and Louisiana in particular, thestate is closer to 5

th
. However, the state, alongwith Randolph County, has some strengths. “Our com-munity college system is a real, real competitive ad-vantage and asset,” Crisco said, adding that the pas-sage of the ¼ cent increase on the sales tax to supportRandolph Community College was a good move. Healso commented that Representative Pat Hurley, Sena-tor Harold Brubaker and Representative Jerry Tillmanwere great supporters of economic development in thecounty. After the keynote, two local business leaderswere honored with the Chamber’s annual awards.Town Manager Roger Davis was honored as the 2010Business Person of the Year and Liberty Hardwareearned 2010 Business of the Year. YOU TOOK MY PARKING SPACE AT CHURCH

One day, a man went to visit a church, He got there early, parked his car and got out. car pulled up near the man and the driver got out and said, "I always park there! You took my place!" Thevisitor went inside for Sunday School, found an empty seat and satdown. A young lady from the church approached him and stated,"That's my seat! You took my place!" The visitor was somewhatdistressed by this rude welcome, but said nothing. After SundaySchool, the visitor went into the sanctuary and sat down. Another member walked up to him and said, " That's where I always sit!You took my place!" The visitor was even more troubled by thistreatment, but still He said nothing. Later as the congregation was praying for Christ todwell among them, the visitor stood up, and his appearance began to change. Horriblescars became visible on his hands and on his sandaled feet. Someone from the congrega-tion noticed him and called out, "What happened to you?" The visitor replied, as his hatbecame a crown of thorns, and a tear fell from his eye, "I took your place.." It was JesusChrist. That's all you have to do. Maybe, just maybe, we can get the world to start think-ing of who took our place.

History fun fact about April Fool’s
Most historians agree that April Fools'Day began when the Christian worldadopted the Gregorian calendar. On theold calendar the New Year was celebratedin the spring for 8 days, the final day onApril 1st, but because the new calendar was so different, the date changed toJanuary 1st. Many of the people wholived in the countryside didn't know aboutthe change and kept celebrating in thespring. Those "in the know" thought thatit was hilarious and began calling theApril celebrators "fools." From then on,these people began to go out of their wayduring this season to fool friends.
