A DAY TO REMEMBER
The Flowerdale Community came together at Moore's Rd Reserve
on the banks of the King Parrot Creek on February 7th on the first
anniversary of Black Saturday.
Leading up to the event we weren't sure how many people would
attend and set it up as a low key event without media. As 11.00am
approached it was pretty clear that it would be a big event as
traffic piled up along the road to the reserve. A crowd of almost
400 people gathered, a number of whom hadn't come back since
the fires. Many people said they had been thinking "will I go?"
during the week unsure of how they would feel on the day but
most decided to attend.
Distribution: 500 copies to Silver Creek Rd., Silver Parrot Rd., Creekside Dr., Riverside Cres., the service road, Moore’s Rd., Spring Valley Rd. Upper King Parrot Rd, and the main road as
far as Minto Rd. Also the Hazeldene Store, Flowerdale Hotel, Strath Creek Store and Glenburn Roadhouse. Articles, advertisements, etc. can be left at the store, posted to PO Box 2008,
Hazeldene, or emailed to Brenda at brendab@internode.on.net

Yet, under-insured and overwhelmed, she and her partner have battled
away in their primitive little tent village right on the block where their
home had once stood. I was greeted with welcoming smiles. There was
no self-pity. There was only vision, spirit and great plans for the future.
How beautiful to see their framed and roofed “work in progress” right
behind their tents and vans.
Across the road from them lives a family – two little kids – half built

for their good fortune. “How can this be?” I ask. “I have the best family.
We have our kids” she replies.
At our weekly meetings, we systematically go through every one of the
14 things which our community asked us to achieve for them. We
update the group on the “state of play” of each one, troubleshooting
problems, working out how to achieve the next stage in the process. We
are constantly reminded by our chairman, that our agenda is
“Flowerdale First”. I marvel at the passion, the drive and the massive
workload taken on by the other members of the FRC. I am humbled and
inspired by the many “work engines” who do so much “on the ground”
work – busy Flowerdalians who have their own share of life’s hardships,
but who willingly give so much for the future of Flowerdale.
