FLOWERDALE COMMUNITY HOUSE INC

Forming Friendships ABN 30 127 305 127

Issue: No.60—March, 2010 PO Box 2008, Hazeldene, 3658

A DAY TO REMEMBER
The Flowerdale Community came together at Moore's Rd Reserve
on the banks of the King Parrot Creek on February 7th on the first
anniversary of Black Saturday.
Leading up to the event we weren't sure how many people would
attend and set it up as a low key event without media. As 11.00am
approached it was pretty clear that it would be a big event as
traffic piled up along the road to the reserve. A crowd of almost
400 people gathered, a number of whom hadn't come back since
the fires. Many people said they had been thinking "will I go?"
during the week unsure of how they would feel on the day but
most decided to attend.

A large part of the crowd then gravitated back to the Flowerdale

Hotel. The Hotel was an integral part of the Flowerdale story, it
was the place that people went when they realised that the fires
were too intense and it was also where the locals famously made
a stand to fight back the flames to save the school, the hall and the
hotel. It also became the hub of the relief effort and the place
where community meetings were held daily for the first six weeks
as the locals self organised to get things happening.

The service was led by Grace Church and Chaplaincy Australia.

The focus of the service was both to reflect but also to look
forward. It has been a year that no one could have predicted with
the loss and suffering endured by so many but also the forging of
new bonds in the community. There was an opening song and a
reflection followed by all attendees picking up a stone and placing
it on a table with some floral wreaths, to be part of a memorial in
the future.
Next was the song "True Blue" together with a series of photos
taken by local photographer Samm Hall. As the song played tears
streamed down the face of everyone there as they reflected and

Hands on Health healing arts in the Flowerdale Hall on Tuesdays.
Members of the community come and place their tired and
knotted bodies and their trust to these caring and committed
people. Some are 4th and 5th year students, but their
professionalism is amazing.
After unhurried attention, they walk out taller with relaxed smiles
on their faces, exclaiming how wonderful it is to have this
important service available to the community. Massage therapists,
chiropractors and osteopaths all work together to facilitate the
best outcome for their clients.
My personal experience of this was when I had a fall and my jaw
and neck were out of place.
Rikki, the massage therapist with magic hands found sore spots
that I didn’t even know existed.

A few manipulations later I stood taller than before and my jaw
now could produce a straight smile, a gentle hand was placed on
my back as I was instructed with follow up care for at home.
The atmosphere is one of gentle kindness and care, smiling faces
and a time out of “normal” time, after the Feb 7 fires peoples’
workload and stress levels have been pushed to the maximum. To
have this healing environment is invaluable to the healing process
of community.
The soft murmurings, conversation, the telling of stories are just
as healing to the psyche and the souls of the people as the
physical side. Tensions are relieved in the psyche as the knots are
teased out of bodies, for this kind of healing synergy to happen it
takes people, certain kinds of people, people that care.

Do you want to share experiences with

other volunteers?
As the anniversary of the devastating fires on February 7 2009
passes by volunteers and volunteer agencies have said they would
like to get volunteers together as a group. These group sessions
can be very beneficial, reducing isolation, enabling people to share
stories and experiences, as well as issues or problems.
Whittlesea Community Connections and Austin Health are
arranging group debrief sessions this month for long-term
volunteers who have been working on recovery projects since the
fires.
Austin Health Psychological Trauma Recovery Service (PTRS)
can offer up to two free sessions for volunteers and can also offer
group information sessions about the effects of trauma and
treatment issues.
Groups of volunteers or agencies with volunteers that would
benefit from these sessions please contact Whittlesea Community
Connections volunteer coordinators Meg Sandercock and Emma
Short at the Whittlesea Community Services Hub in 36 Walnut St
Whittlesea on phone number 9719 1000 Monday to Friday 9am -
5pm and email

How beautiful to see their framed and roofed “work in progress” right

At our weekly meetings, we systematically go through every one of the

are constantly reminded by our chairman, that our agenda is
“Flowerdale First”. I marvel at the passion, the drive and the massive
workload taken on by the other members of the FRC. I am humbled and
inspired by the many “work engines” who do so much “on the ground”
work – busy Flowerdalians who have their own share of life’s hardships,
but who willingly give so much for the future of Flowerdale.
