CITY OF KAMLOOPS – SUSTAINABLE KAMLOOPS PLAN

2010 APRIL 17 PUBLIC FORUM


OUTLINE OF OPENING PANEL SESSION (9:00 to 9:50 am)

WELCOME AND OPENING

 Welcome to all attendees


 What does sustainability mean to our community?
o Environmental integrity
o Social responsibility
o Economic opportunity
 While past efforts have been made in all of these areas of sustainability, there are
opportunities to go further
 This has been recognized by City Council, who are leading the preparation of the Sustainable
Kamloops Plan
 This is a multi-year process being conducted with the support of the Governments of Canada
and British Columbia, as well as the Union of BC Municipalities
 Council wants significant public input into the plan; that is the purpose of today’s public
forum
 Some background work has taken place, and initial targets set in key areas of sustainability
 we need your comments on these, as well as ideas on how we can get to targets of
sustainability

 Would like to invite panelists from our community to provide elaboration:


o Glen Farrow – Environmental Services Supervisor
o Jen Casorso – Social Development Supervisor
o Dan Sulz – Venture Kamloops CEO

 Environmental Sustainability by Glen Farrow (9:05 to 9:15 am)

 Social Sustainability by Jen Casorso (9:15 to 9:25 am)

 Economic Sustainability by Dan Sulz (9:25 to 9:35 am)

 Some Examples of Integration – Moderated by David Duckworth (9:35 to 9:40 am)


o Water Metering
o Tournament Capital Program

FRAMEWORK FOR THE DAY

 Opportunity for you to shape the goals and directions for the Sustainable Kamloops Plan

 Individual workshops will be held for the following topics:


o Solid waste
o Energy and greenhouse gas emissions
o Transportation
o Land and growth management
o Natural environment
o Air quality
o Water
o Economic development
o Social Topics #1 – housing, community safety, food security, health and wellness
o Social Topics #2 – recreation, education, arts/culture/heritage
 All workshops held concurrently at 10,11,1,2 and 3
 Each will be 50 minutes in length
 Located in the Parkside Lounge and Rivers Room
 Identified by banners

 Also static displays located on concourse for those unable to join workshop

 Also website with information, and survey for your input

We have some distance to go to ensure that our community is sustainable, and that we do our
part at a broader scale
