Learn Acoustic Guitar – Introduction to Finger Picking
Often the problem with any guitar tutorial is that you are only taught what to play, not necessarily how to play it. There are many di
erent ways to learn acousticguitar all of which aim to one result, in this document we will delve into basic fingerpicking technique. This technique has been used as an alternative to strumming since the invention of the lute, it allows the player to create more complex lines with distinct bassmovements to create an altogether di
erent result to that achieved whenstrumming. To execute this technique properly we need to adopt a good hand posture thatleaves all of our fingers free to pluck the required strings. When a student wants tolearn acoustic guitarI find describing the image of holding a golf ball softly in thehand gives them a good idea for what correct finger picking technique should be.We normally use only four fingers of the right hand to pluck the strings and belowyou can see each finger has a corresponding letters. We will only use the thumb andfirst three fingers, this is the way most players from virtuoso flamengo guitarists tofinger picking rock- pop players play. The letters are abbreviations of the Italian words for the fingers: Pollice, Indice,Medio and Anulare. You will commonly seeguitar instructionrefer to this system as“PIMA”There are three main options on how you can pluck the strings, and all of them areacceptable.www.rhythmguitarzero2hero.com
