Have students count the number of boys and girls in the class.

Have a volunteer put base ten blocks on the overhead projector for thenumber of boys and girls
-
Have a third volunteer combine the two sets of blocks to count how many students are in the class
-
 Ask students how they could find out how many more girls or boys thereare in the class. Students may have different strategies.
One strategy is to pair a boy with a girl (or do this with blocks onthe overhead), until you run out of boys or girls. Then count the boysand girls who are not paired.
