Louis McIsaac
(right) of Fairview has beenbreeding and racing standardbreds through fivedecades, and has been a long time consignor tothe PEI Colt Stakes Sale. He has bred thewinners of five Colt Stakes races including twodouble winners in Royal Situation and Molzanand most recently in 2008 with Comeback Quick. Molzan was retained by Louis whenshe failed to bring the minimum starting bid atthe 1991 PEI Colt Stakes Sale. She went on todominate the regional stakes, was the MaritimeChampion at both two and three, and was theUSTA District 10 Horse Of the Year in 1993.
Alfred Moeller
Bert Haneveld
emigrated from Holland in1950. He worked all his life in the farmingindustry as an apple and egg producer. In 1981he bought his first yearling in Bayside Mickeyand gave him to his son-in-law Bill Hicken totrain. Bert won several PEI Colt Stakes eventsincluding three in one year with Lubricant,Solar Knight and D Js Amy in 1987, a first forColt Stakes action. He repeated with SolarKnight the next year, as she set a new recordfor three-year-old pacing fillies.

Charlotte Ranch,
tucked away in a beautifulsetting near Sussex, New Brunswick, was thecreation of Alfred Moeller (left). He stoodseveral successful stallions including KnightlyBlue Chip, a sire that moved colt stakes racingahead in short order by siring the first sub-2:00Maritime bred two-year-old when OvernightStorm went in 1:59.4 in an Atlantic Sires eventon the five-eights track in Moncton. KnightlyBlue Chip stands second in siring PEI ColtStakes winners with twenty including doublewinner Charlottes Blues.
Bert Haneveld
Morah Kerr
, like many a young girl, startedoff with a saddle horse competing at hunterand jumping events. She spent several years inFlorida working for Fred Grant and forEmmons MacKay back in Truro. She sharedownership on a number of stakes winners withClare MacDonald including Island Tradition, adouble winner in 1998-99. Retained as abroodmare, Island Tradition would producestakes winners in Super S Crosby in 2008 anddouble winner Super Sidney C in 2005 and2006. Morah also won in 2007 with her ownImps Finesse, a Maritime Champion colt.Morah is currently the President of the AtlanticStandardbred Breeders and sits on the NovaScotia Racing Council.

Personalities
Robert (Bob) E. Connelly
has been involvedwith Colt Stakes activities since the earlyseventies. He was one of the proponents of thefirst yearling sale and each year since he hasvolunteered as a bid spotter as well as being onthe sale committee. He has a small breedingoperation that he calls RE’s Stable and theyoungsters bearing the RE’s name have beenprominent in Maritime stakes events includingRE’s Cloud, RE’s Queen Virgina, Colt Stakeswinner Incoming Storm and most recentlyRE’s Mary, winner of the Atlantic BreedersCrown for two-year-old pacing fillies in 2008.
The Downey Stable
was started in Saint Johnby Milton Downey and continues today underthe guidance of his son Steven. Milton’s firstColt Stakes win came in 1988 with hishomebred Dawn Down then in 1990 withPhilip Down and the colt Burden Of Freedompurchased at the Island sale in 1988. TheDowney Stable has claimed five more PEI ColtStakes wins since, most recently with three-year-old filly winner Emily J Down in 2008.

of North Sydney have raced horsesin the Maritimes, Ontario and the NewEngland States for almost fifty years. It is theirsuccess in the Island Colt Stakes, however, thatis particularily noteworthy. For the last twentyyears the brothers have been fixtures at theannual yearling sales and have had nine ColtStakes winners between them beginning withDave’s record setting win driving his ownCharlottes Buddy in 1990. John’s first of fivewins came with double winner Miss FlamingoToo who won in 1997 and then also set arecord in 1998.

of Kilkerran Farms stood thestallions Oil Count and Harrods and mostrecently Lisryan. As a breeder he has producedeight Colt Stakes winners, most notably triplewinner Kilkerran Fury and his full brotherKilkerran Ingle. His best, as a breeder, isKilkerran Scot by Harrods, that has justrecently gone over $500,000 lifetime and isnow the third richest Maritime bred of all time.Doug’s brother Jack was manager of theAtlantic Sires Stakes program for many years.

Alexander Fraser,
better known as Sandy, hasbeen a prominent owner of stakes winners for amany years. He did extremely well withpurchases of the offspring of Willow Bird, aNew Brunswick based stallion, buying hischampion fillies Diplomat Katie, Some NiceFriday and Some Nice Ketch, all Colt Stakeswinners, and then breeding his own Guy OnThe Go by Willow Bird after purchasing thesire from the dispersal of David Killeel’s stock.Sandy enjoyed his victories immensely but wasquick to give the credit to his longtime trainerand friend Russell Burgoyne.

Robert “Bob” Dewar
was a staunch supporterof the Summerside Raceway and was track superintendent among other roles. He wasnever so proud as when the first sub 2:00 milewas paced on PEI over “his” track. He and histravelling companion Earl “Boomer” Cannonwere known as the Sunshine Boys and nevermissed a regional meeting although there weretimes when they missed the last ferry home.The Island Breeders leg in Summerside forthree–year-old colts carries his name.

June Coyle
has likely paddocked more ColtStakes winners than any other groom. Workingexclusively for Joe Smallwood, she has caredfor most of his thirteen winners, including fiverecord setters, and probably several othersbeside. It takes a special kind of person to look after high performance horses and June hasbeen up to the task, doing her job with skill,dedication and good humour.
Sandy Fraser
David Killeel
of Fredericton bred the recordbreaking That’s My David and developedseveral other stakes winners. A restaurantowner in Fredericton, he maintained apicturesque farm property north of that citywhere he stood sires such as Easy Come EasyGo and Willow Bird. He bred some of the beststakes fillies of their day in Some Nice, astakes record holder, Some Nice Ketch, SomeNice Friday and Diplomat Katie, all ColtStakes winners. Diplomat Katie produced herown stakes winner in Diplomate Girl in 2007.
Bob Dewar
Russ Doyle
was a newspaper-man who wrotea significant chapter in Colt Stakes history. Hepurchased stakes winner Dexter’s Wine at thePEI sale, then produced stakes winner MitchellPaul, a winner of almost $250,000 from her.He also bought the full sister Dexters Jane whoset a stakes record at three on the way toearning almost $300,000 lifetime. There weretwo other winners in Dexters Dude andPrincess Kelleigh all with trainer Earl Smith.
