PRESIDENT, KING COLLEGE

Many traditions shape the legacy of King College. Our heritage

is one of academic excellence, cultural transformation, and most
of all, heartfelt stewardship. As we pause in our 140th year to
look back, it’s remarkable to note how generous choices—some,
made at our very inception—continue to create educational
opportunities today.

Throughout our history a legacy of stewardship has reliably

transformed the vision of inspired leaders and educators into
lasting pathways for our students’ success. Supporters in 1867
could never imagine the many ways in which their gifts have
been manifested in the livelihood of the College, as well as in the
lives of our alumni.

Nowhere is the act of giving so magnified. One gift made by an

individual can be the catalyst and the model for a life that, in
turn, enriches numerous others.

This report helps applaud our donors who, through their

gifts, affirm King’s gracious calling. Generous hearts have set
high standards for us to follow. As we celebrate our past and
collaborate on the future, I challenge us all to consider how our
own legacies will be measured in the lives of those yet to come.

A BOUT THE C OVER
With the stroke of a pen, the Rev.
James King finalized his donation of
land to the College in 1866. This act
of generosity established a legacy of
giving that continues to this day. As
we pause in our 140th year to look
back, it’s remarkable to note how
generous choices—some, made at our
very inception—continue to create
educational opportunities today.
The Legacy of a Gift
In April 1866, only a year after the
Civil War ended, members of the Holston 3
Presbytery assembled at the old Pleasant
Grove Church to create a college that
would combine academic excellence and
Christian commitment. When Rev. James
King stepped forward to offer the land
and buildings for the first campus, he
established a rich legacy that has benefited
generations of King College students.
Since its first classes convened in
August 1867, King College has achieved a
nationally recognized academic reputation
with a worldwide reach that goes far
beyond the scope of Rev. King’s gift. For
18 consecutive years, King has been ranked
one of the best colleges in the nation by
U.S. News & World Report. Its Bristol campus
now encompasses 135 acres and seven
additional locations throughout northeast

K ing’s 140th
anniversary wasn’t
the only milestone
that the College celebrated during
the 2006–07 academic year.
The College recorded its highest-
ever enrollment at nearly 1,300
students, hosted seven successful
satellite locations, added innovative
degree programs to the academic
catalog, and welcomed noted guests
to interact with the community.

the Oval, studying and serving
in our region as well as locations
around the world. The Tornado
athletic teams made strong showings
and clinched regional conferences.
And throughout the year, alumni
and donor giving was an active
affirmation of the College’s mission,
vision, and pursuits.
S ALZBURG S EMINAR
From the freshman “Experience D.C.” trip to Washington, D.C., and on
to studies around the globe, King’s educational process is designed to
help students explore their own world view as well as the perspective
of others. In June 2006, KC students were invited to participate in
the Salzburg Seminar’s “Global Citizenship: America and the World”
program. In a storybook Austrian setting they joined other international
youth to discuss prominent issues including globalization, human rights,
and cultural values from across the ethnic spectrum. Experiences like
these remain with students for a lifetime, informing their decisions and
outlook for years to come.
C ONVOCATION S PEAKERS
Each gift to King increases student access to a notable gathering of
authors, musicians, performers, educators, and political figures, many of
whom are shaping our culture today. In 2006–07, the KC community
hosted such guests as author Wendell Berry; Dr. Iain Torrance (pictured
above), chaplain to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II; missionary Steve
Saint; and congressman Harold Ford, Jr., among many others. Through
visits like these, students and the community are able to explore a wide
range of viewpoints on a multitude of topics. Exposure to established
personalities also helps students foster a lifelong love of learning and
encourages each one to craft an individualized, well-rounded outlook.

R ECORD E NROLLMENT A RT G ALA AT THE O LDE F ARM

With a strategic eye on affordability and accessibility, King has
concentrated on measured growth and outreach into underserved
areas. The turn of the millennium marked a new era of growth, and
in each year since 2000 the College has experienced a record level
of enrollment. In 2006–07, King welcomed nearly 1,300 students to
the main campus and seven satellite locations throughout northeast
Tennessee and southwest Virginia. The result: steadily increasing
participation in King’s mission, vision, and standards of academic
excellence, and ever-larger generations of KC alums.
One of the advantages of a King College education is the at-hand
availability of fine art. Through the gifts of Board of Trustees member
Neal Caldwell and wife Alice (Morrow) Caldwell (’51), the College has
accumulated one of the most diverse art collections in the southeast.
The Caldwell Art Collection includes works from such masters as
Rembrandt, Toulouse-Lautrec, Matisse, Pissarro and others, allowing
students, visitors, and attendees of regional galas an up-close look at the
handiwork and heritage of masters. In the fall of 2006, the Collection
was officially premiered at an evening gathering at the Olde Farm golf
club in Bristol, Va.

J OHNSON C IT Y S ATELLITE S ITE
King’s consistent growth over the past several years has been most
visible in the expansion of regional satellite sites. The opening of the
Johnson City site at the Millennium Centre in spring 2007 marked
the first time that each of the Tri-Cities had a King location to call its
own. The location specializes in offering King’s Bachelor and Master
of Business Administration programs, as well as the popular RN-to-
BSN degree. The strategy provides working adults the opportunity to
optimize their professional portfolios, and also responds to employers’
needs by strengthening and diversifying our regional workforce.

M ISSION T RIPS
Through their gifts, King College’s donors create opportunities for
students to experience the joyful work of stewardship. In 2006–07, King
students helped construct homes with Habitat for Humanity in Florida.
They also forged friendships with members of the Presbyterian Church of
East Africa while living with Kenya’s Maasai and helping the tribe build
facilities that will be used for outreach and instruction. KC students also
regularly lend a hand to projects closer to home—they volunteer with
such organizations as the Boys & Girls Club, the Widow’s Mite, River’s
Way, the YWCA, and Abuse Alternatives, and go on to become lifelong
advocates for others.

A THLETICS
2006–07 was a momentous year for King’s athletic teams. First year Coach
George Pitts led the men’s basketball team to the Appalachian Athletic
Conference (AAC) tournament championship. The AAC also recognized
new head women’s basketball Coach Michele Williams (’01) as Coach
of the Year. Spring 2007 marked a milestone as volleyball Coach Susie
Toomey announced she would pass on her 22-year tradition of excellence.
Toomey’s accomplishments include an overall win/loss record of 749/229,
10 AAC conference championships, 24 Coach of the Year awards and
three NAIA National Tournament appearances. Son Chris Toomey (’97),
assistant coach, was chosen to lead the women’s team.

P HON - A -T HON S UCCESS
King’s alumni are a central element of the College’s success, providing
volunteer hours, expertise, and financial support for present-day students.
In 2006–07, connections between students and alums helped drive one
of King’s most successful Phon-A-Thons ever, providing essential gifts for
the College’s Annual Fund for Scholarships & Programs. The Annual Fund is at
the heart of financial aid, assisting more than 98% of King’s students with
the cost of achieving their educational dreams. Our network of donors
also helps graduating scholars pursue additional degrees or careers with
much-reduced personal debt, allowing them more freedom to create their
own legacies.

MSN P ROGRAM
Caring for others is a tradition at King, and one that has become the
central focus of multiple degree programs. The College’s popular
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and RN-to-BSN degree paths
were augmented in 2006–07 with the addition of a graduate-level
program, the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN). The MSN provides
training along four central tracks: nursing administration; clinical
specialization in acute care/critical care/ER/trauma care; nursing in
health ministry; and nurse education. Training at this level offers
students the opportunity to learn vital skills, while also helping
employers offset the shortage of qualified caregivers.

N EW K LINE C LASSROOMS
Hand in hand with King’s growing enrollment is the ongoing renovation
of available campus space. With the help of donors, Kline Gymnasium’s
135,000-gallon swimming pool was covered and transformed into three
modern classrooms. The classrooms now serve approximately 120
students and their instructors, supplying the square footage necessary for
larger classes to gather. More renovations are planned to provide King’s
expanding community with additional learning areas. Through forward-
looking gifts like these, King’s network of supporters create lasting benefit
for current students as well as many future scholars.

King’s 140th anniversary has presented many
of us with the opportunity to reflect on the
milestones and markers that have shaped this
long-standing community.
Especially in our fast-moving culture, 140 years
is a formidable measure to contemplate. The
College was formed in the aftermath of the Civil
War, and the years since have been long and
remarkable times.
And yet here, they seem familiar. It’s perhaps
because King’s founders laid such solid
groundwork that these 14 decades seem within
reach. While the College has changed campuses,
grown exponentially, and reached out to
establish additional sites, our core mission and
vision has changed little. Despite a multitude of
technological and societal changes, it’s not hard
to imagine our youngest alumni sitting down

with the very first graduates and finding many
similarities in their desire to learn, achieve, and
serve others.
In a similar fashion our network of donors has
been woven from the beginning with generous
hearts. Their steadfast belief in King’s mission
and vision has, over time, fostered the College
from a handful of students and a single structure
to a student body of nearly 1,300, a 135-acre
campus, and seven regional satellite sites.
As we commemorate our history and plan the
College’s next steps, we want to applaud the
donors listed here for affirming King’s heritage,
traditions, and strategic outlook. Their support
is opening doors for many current-day students,
as well as numerous young scholars to come.

organization is reflected in the College’s mission
to educate students in an academically rigorous
